Just curious if there any Apple GarageBand users out there. I recently bought an iMac and just now starting to experiment with GB. Any thoughts, tips, or experiences you would like to share? |

Hi JohnnyZ, how's the fall colors over by you?
I have GB in my Ibook, and have just started using it myself. It seems pretty good, but I'm certainly no expert, and this is the first time I've ever used something like this.
I've been told the recording quality is good, so I have to take their word for it.
Here is the first thing I made, using a backing track I got from the web, and me recorded with a mic, into an M-audio Firewire Solo interface.

Way to play, Dave!
Where did you get that backing track? And, how did you import it to GB? I didn't realize that it can be done(?)...
I attended a GB workshop at my local Apple Store, and learned that using an M-Audio interface is way better than plugging a guitar directly into the iMac. I was also told that playing through an amp with a line out to the iMac yields a very good sound. I'd love to play through my DrZ Maz18, but it doesn't have a line out. However, in the DrZ forum, I'm getting suggestions for hooking up an attenuator box...
Playing through a mic is another option, and it obviously works well given how great your clip sounds. But, I don't have one (yet)...
BTW, the fall colors are really starting to show in my area of northeast MA, but driving up north to NH yesterday was a psychedelic experience!
Thanks for contributing to this discussion. I'd love to see more! |

What I did was to drag the track from Itunes on to a waiting track on GB. I just make a basic track on GB for it.
I think I got the backing track here;

Thanks about the playing, I'm still learning.
Here's another clip;

Don't know if you get out this way much, but I'll be playing a couple gigs in Woodstock, in Nov. and Dec. |

All the stuff that you can reach from my profile was recorded on Garageband - it's like a stripped down version of Cubase and for me, it's perfect. I have added some Apple expansion packs with strings and extra horns etc which are fabulous.
I've also invested in Channelstrip for Garageband which retails for hundreds of dollars for mainstream recording but is something like 60 bucks for Garageband (with the same functionality!). This took everything to a whole new level and brought studio quality filters and EQ within reach of an absolute moron (that'll be me.....) - if you have Garageband, you have to have Channelstrip - you simply won't believe the difference. Yes, I also represent a number of margarine manufacturers.......
Bear in mind that if you want your work mastering, this limits the options later as not many people work with Garageband at that level, but then, if they have Apple Logic Studio, you're fine.
Hope this helps, assuming you come back to this thread! |

Just about to start using it JohnnyZ so we'll be learning at the same time.
Just a couple of hours ago my new M-Audio Firewire Solo and KRK Rockit RP-5 monitors were delivered to my desk. Can't wait to get home and plug 'em into the Macbook, fire up GB and see what happens.
And nice playing DaveH!

Happy to see this thread reborn! Honestly, I've done nothing yet with Garageband- free time and motivation being factors. As an amateur at creating and playing, I welcome any and all pointers, especially getting started!
BTW, Millibobs, thanks for your recent active role in this forum. It's refreshing to have new and enthusiastic characters contributing!
Jim, looking forward to reading about your progress with your new toys... |

Cheers for the nice comment. If you want to torture your collective eardrums, check out the web link shown in my profile - some Garageband stuff is on there. |

Hope nobody minds if I jump on the bandwagon - here are three songs from a jam at the local Blues Club here in Hartlepool from January 2006 - unrehearsed, obviously, and you can really tell. The singer's the leader of a well-known blues band here in NE England. I can't remember what amp I was going through, but it was something that would fit into the back pocket of your jeans Oh, well - good fun was had by all.

Hi Nineacres & DaveH, I enjoyed your music on Soundclick ! It's nice to see members posting clips, and links to clips, on this forum. I don't care much about amps & pedals... but I do love music. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Thanks very much, most of the recordings I have there are from jam sessoins with a keyboard player/old friend, and were the first time we played together in 25 years. No rehearsals other than a quick once-through, and hit record.
It's a little raw.
Nineacres- Your blues sound good, it's nice to hear that you folks across the pond can play some authentic blues. |
