Up until recently I'd only ever purchased a few of Larry's albums - starting with On Solid Ground - which I really like but which was maybe a bit too laid back for my taste. I later found out why there'd been a bit more of a nice/emotional/spiritual(?) sound to the album (perhaps anyway), so can forgive him that one!

Anyway, about 12 months ago though, I bought the Carlton/Lukather live in Tokyo CD. Awesome. These two are poles apart in terms of their sound and approach, but both of them really rip it up. Anyone who is worried about Carlton descending to the depths of Kenny G should have a listen.

On a similar, but unrelated note, I recently bought the Ritenour/Grusin classical album (Two Worlds?). Not bad, maybe a tad sterile in parts. Interesting seeing Ritenour again releasing something different, but still a little unconvincing.

Try "Last Nite" from Larry Carlton. A very good record, no smooth jazz here.

Last Nite is THE Larry Carlton CD.

Some REALLY good live playing at Baked Potato in LA.

"Emotions wound us so" still gives me goosebumps...and I've heard that track a 1000-times.

Always enjoy Solid Ground, for his versions of Josie and Layla. For my money these are well thought out and executed instrumentals of some very popular tunes. I also admit to getting into some songs on the Renegade Gentlemen release, although it is a bit over the top and heavy handed most of the time. Any Rit fans out there - the CD Larry and Lee has some good moments, too, although they both play it a little safe.

Deep Into It (2001) has a good cover "Roll with it" and "It's a groove thing" is really nice. Sounds like old Larry.

His worst sonh is his most played song "Smiles and Smiles to go". That one really get on my nerves and when he plays the acoustic in general

I think Robben should lay off the "Larry was influenced by me, not the other way around" stuff. It is more than "mildly embarassing": it comes across as arrogant. For the record, Larry Carlton did Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark" LP before he ever met Robben. Larry's use of the volume pedal to get that "swell" effect is clearly demonstrated on Court and Spark. Later, when Robben was brought in to do the tour with Joni, Larry met Robben at the studio and showed Robben the parts from the record. It is true that Larry, ever the gentleman, has always credited Robben as a heavy influence on Larry's blues playing. Larry gave Robben a big thank you, along with John Coltrane, on his first LP, "Room 335," which came out in 1978, before Robben's first official solo release, "Inside Story" (1979). Larry still claims he is Robben's biggest fan (sorry Elizabeth). Larry told me he would love to do a duet record with Robben, like he did with Lee Ritenour ("Larry and Lee") in 1995 or 1996. They should have done this a long time ago, when they were both with the GRP -- Stretch record label. Larry has said that the "Larry and Lee" project was "strictly commercial", meaning that Larry and Lee are not close friends or musical compatriots (even though I personally like them both). I have even heard stories that the L.A. studio musicians in the early 70s thought Lee was kind of arrogant, coming into sessions and immediately sitting in the "first chair" guitar seat, ahead of people like Tommy Tedesco and Dean Parks. Anyway, we should all try to convince Robben to get together with Larry for a duet record. Anybody care to try to convince Robben and/or his management? (Believe me, I've tried before and it went nowhere)...
