Definitely check out the Fuchs. I've owned a lot of other great amps and could not get close to Robben's tone like I can with the Fuchs. So many of the players that I've turned on to this amp have ended up selling their other amps. I'll hook up with guys who have four or five other amps and after they get the Fuchs they don't want to play anything else. It's really that good.

You can fill out a player profile here: http://fuchsaudio.com/purchase.php It's a free, no obligation thing.

I guarantee that you can get can nail a Robben Ford tone with it or I'll refund your money and take the amp back. And I'm saying that knowing that there are other factors involved in getting the tone. If you send the amp back, all you'll be out is shipping. And I include the settings for the amp too.

Take part in my contest to see if you can hear the difference between Larry Carlton's Dumble and my Fuchs.

If you get the answer right, you get a free CD.

Well folks, it's been a while since I last checked in. I really appreciate everyone's input. During my search I've played many amps, talked with musicians whose opinions I respect and last month I went to the Robben clinic for more inspiration. Anyway my buddy Bill and tonequest guru, who used to work at Gryphon in Palo Alto and is now settled in Albuquerque, NM with his own business

recommended JoMama Amps in Santa Fe, specifically Joe's Kelemen R-45 w/3-knob reverb

After speaking directly with Joe (a great guy!) I decided on the K-45 as my amp choice. It's 45-watts with 6L6 power tubes, a 10" speaker and a Celestion Vintage Century 12" speaker. it's being delivered today and I can't wait. I'll let you know how it works out.

Patocaster

I'm late joining this thread but for what it's worth, I've played for about 100 years and have seen off a few different amps. After a long break, I came blazing back in to discover how much stuff costs these days and promptly re-mortgaged the house to pay for a Lonestar 2x12. Great clean channel but the drive channel was pants.........

Had two Deluxe Reverb Re-Issues and they were divine but both had major faults - wound up with a Bassman '59 re-isse. This is THE amp and I will not part with it. I have a Blues Deluxe re-issue as a back-up and recording amp and this is very musical and expressive for a 1x12, although the drive on it is again, absolute pants...They are both tweed finished and look really groovy as well as sounding beautiful. I call them Thelma and Louise and they behave accordingly by pouting and flouting all over the place.

Because I run the amps clean, I need a good board which covers a range of genres; main pedals are a Zendrive, Fulltone OCD, Keeley Compressor and a mod'd DS1. I use the OCD to creat the feel of a gently driven amp and then use the Zendrive to kick it's ass over the cliff top (in true Thlema and Louise fashion). I have to say, this rig makes everyone smile who beholds it. It loves my cheapo PRSE SE soapbar best of all my guitars but my US Tele and Les Paul all come over pretty well. I even run my Martin D15 through the same rig but tweak the EQ for that.

Best part of the whole deal is after a rehearsal or gig, when the guitar geeks gather at the rear of the amp to sniff the wood/valve aroma. Does heaven have a smell? Oh yes it certainly does..........

Last thing, I have been checking out the Mesa Boogie Express 5:50. The best amp they have made in recent years IMHO. Does everything my Lonestar did, is more portable and the equivalent of 4 channels! You have to try one of these as part of the search. I'll get one when the UK prices drop a bit more or from e-bay.

Good luck with the search!

I've got my first gig this weekend with my new JoMama amp. I'll let you know how it performs. I already know how I'll do...
