Spatzi, why are you dragging Robben's clinics into this? That's a total drag, for you to do that.
Oh brother. What next? How is that a drag? I mentioned this as an EXAMPLE of HOW NOT TO TEACH AND INSPIRE, to highlight the absurdity of LOEK and his "...You will never reach the musical level of RF" insult towards someone (me) he's never even heard play. Is this not obvious? (eyes roll) Maybe we need a 'humor' or 'sarcasm' icon.

You Want the Truth!, You Guys Cant Handle the Truth!
Never seen the Board get so personal, sheesh.
Anyways, at first I was expecting something, (don't know what),
different from Truth. But after playing it a few times it has grown on
me. I noticed that a lot of the songs are on the flated side of the circle
of fifths. I also am curious that the last album started with
Keep on Runnin, this album starts with Lateral Climb. Is Robben trying
to tell us something? I don't care really to get into an in depth analysis
of Robben's playing or which direction he is headed, or whether he is going
to be Rich an Famous, or successful. He's already got it all as far as I can
tell, talent... more than enough, house, wife (Beautiful too). What else is
there. Nuff said, keep on bickering if you want. I'm going to see him
play 2 sets in Oakland this week. Best 50 bucks I'll spend all month.
Hope he has the Dumble instead of the Fender. And oh yeah,
Check out the Live Tribute to Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield album
if you want a taste of the old stuff. It's quite nice.
Cheers Fellows.

I really like the new album. I see more and more with each album how Robben is becoming more balanced as a complete musician. I see now that he has more to offer than just phenomenol guitar chops!

Gosh, I'm sorry I've been so busy at work and missed all of this!
When you start comparing musicians, you risk falling back into the old "Stones vs. Beatles," "Frank vs. Bing," and "Monkees vs. Cowsills" stuff that was constant fodder for the old fan magazines. Music isn't like the track and field 5000 meter race. Re the latter, at any given time you can figure out who holds the world record, who has won the most Olympic gold medals, who has the most victories on that year's international track and field circuit, etc. It's cut and dried. The clock doesn't lie. But with music, there is no clock. Your heart hears Robben, or Warren Haynes, or Helen Haynes, or Jimmy Reed, or (heaven forbid) Celine Dione through the filter of everything that you've absorbed in your life. And no one else in the world has lived YOUR life. It's as if you and a friend go to a track meet, and you see a 100-yard dash, and your friend sees the pole vault, and then you try to figure out which of you is right about who was best!
But the subjectivity of music is a GOOD thing. If it were not, we'd simply get out the stopwatch and then all agree on who was the best, and ignore the rest.
By the way, I like "Truth." Is it my favorite RF CD? No. Is it my least favorite? No. More than that, I won't say. _________________ - BlueRunner
Of course, there really is no debate. Ginger's best days are obviously long past. Mary Ann's the only one out there still growing, still stretching, exploring her limits, reaching for new artistic heights. She continues to display the kind of fire and passion we haven't seen out of Ginger in years.
For what it's worth, I'm about to fire up "Truth" again here at work. I'm really enjoying this one.
Samantha by a mile. She had a mischievous streak that made her much more interesting. Darrin would be getting all flustered, but Samantha never lost her cool.

Well............I guess the time has really come to leave this discussion board. I've been a member for a couple of years, am a avid RF fan (always will be), a former professional guitarist, & attended one of Robben's clinics (last October at Robben's home in Ojai) to gain some in-person insight into his musicality. Initially, I thought this discussion board was fact filled, fun, & provided a place for intelligent folks to post their comments. However, recently I've seen it deteriorate into childish banter and picayune comments about the state of Robben's songwriting...........all pretty ridiculous considering RF's resume. And..........who really cares about the settings on his Zendrive, amps, guitars, etc. One's voice as a musician should come from within and not be determined by trying to duplicate what another player has done. Listening to other musicians and just hearing them play for the sake of playing should be benefit enough. I played out for 12 years and never felt I needed to sound like anyone but myself. Technically, many players I admired both locally and nationally had skills beyond mine, but I, at least, projected "me." I'll continue listening to and really appreciating Robben's playing...........for me, the finest guitarist performing today. But, this discussion board will no longer be a part of my daily online visits.
