I like the references to the Wishbone Ash guitarists. Never heard of WA until they opened for Focus back in '73. Blew me away!
And, speaking of Focus, Jan Akerman was always one of my favorites.
Others- Alvin Lee, John Petrucci, Ty Tabor, and of course, my first ever fave, John Lennon... |

Joe Walsh, folks, much under-rated and way ahead of the pack in my view. He's so laid back he's on his back......but he can play.
Also, a UK guitarist of major repute is Bill Nelson who fronted Bebop Deluxe in the 70's. Both major influences of mine.
Regards to all! |

Of course there are a gazillion "favorite" guitarists that we all know and love (David Gilmore, Joe Walsh, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, etc., etc., and so on, and so on).
However, here are a few of my personal favorite, less commonly known (or appreciated) artists who, IMHO, are equally as groundbreaking, trend setting, entertaining, and/or influential:
Jay Donellan - LOVE Mk.2 = (Imaginative and fluid lead guitar - great sound and chops)
Bryan MacLean - LOVE = (superb acoustic finger picking styles and beautiful songwriting)
Erik Brann - IRON BUTTERFLY - (Great rock/psychedelic sound, tone, technique)
Andy Powell - WISHBONE ASH
Ted Turner - WISHBONE ASH Mk.1 = (Tho already mentioned by others, I had to throw these two in again because of their popularizing of the whole twin lead guitar thing).
Ron Morgan - WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND, ELECTRIC PRUNES Mk.2, THREE DOG NIGHT = (Ron is sooooo unsung, I only became aware of him in recent years tho I have admired his work for nearly 40 years while attributing it to other players. Jan Akerman is often credited with developing the technique of working the guitar's volume pot while picking but, in truth, Ron was recording with that technique back in 1968... years before FOCUS had their heyday)
Bob Yeazel - WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND, SUGARLOAF
Michael Knust - FEVER TREE = (Another unsung groundbreaker, Michael is the king of the "you could go out to lunch, come back, and it would STILL be sustaining" guitar - for me this is where the whole concept of sustaining rock guitar all began. Tho he passed away a few years back, in his day he was admired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and to this day is still held in high regard by those players who are/were aware of him and his sound).
And, while we're at it, let's throw Buck Dharma's (BLUE OYSTER CULT) name into the pot, shall we? LOL
Almost 50% of those I've mentioned have died in recent years but, tho generally unacknowledged, their legacies and influences live on.
I have more obscuries I'll highlight when I have the time. _________________ B C-ing U!
