He wrote that song and a few others - caught him singing and playing acoustic on some program and you could tell straight off that he's a player.

Some interesting names are coming out of this thread and I'm spending some time tonight rooting out a few tracks - always good expand one's musical vocabulary!

Hi Millibobs,

I can reccommend "The Anthology" 2 CD box set by Roy Buchanan. He does a hauntingly great live version of Hey Joe, and they is a lovely little out take at the end of the 2nd CD where the sound engineer in the studio says something like, "you have about 20 minutes, just play!". For me he is one of those unsong heroes, and his style was assimulated by other great players like Danny Gatton. Check it out.

Here's my list , below, with my most influential in the top 5, although I could name many as being great in their own right.

I would like to add that Prince is not on the list but it was strangely enough his "Purple Rain" song which inspired me to pick up the guitar!

Robben Ford (great feel, technique, improvisation, and tone)
Steve Morse (brilliant compositions, eclectic styles particularly early stuff)
Pat Metheny (just superb in composition, improvisation and technique)
Eric Johnson (so distinctive and great with his sound and playing)
Martin Taylor (my favourite finger style and top jazz guitarist)

others (no particular order);

Larry Carlton (maybe should be in the above for the same reasons as Robben)
Niles Rogers (his funk rhythm stuff of the seventies I still love today)
Roy Buchanan (blues innovator of the tele)
Danny Gatton (took over where Roy B left of, sadly for a short time)
Jeff Beck (an innovator)
Jimi Hendrix (pioneered the electric guitar revolution)
John Williams (great classical guitar contemporary)
George Benson (important in the Jazz guitar evolution)
Jeff Golub (tasteful contemporary Jazz)
Matt Schoffield (great young UK blues artist; tasteful playing which I prefer over Joe Bassamona)
Joe Satriani (had to have a mention. Best of his genre)

I finaly had some time to catch up with the board. It seems everybody is talking about great Lead Guitarist? I was thinking maybe Pete Townsend as a great rhythm master and song writer.
