Anybody got any hints on getting the hook of this song right. It's been driving me crazy, myself and the other guys in the band just can't get it quite in the right place! it almost feels to me like it hiccups right before...

any help much appreciated!

One of the parts is eighth note triplets and the "hiccup" part is accenting the up beat instead of the downbeat of a quarter note when you subdivide it into two eighth notes.. The first eighth note is silent and the second one is the one you play, allowing it to sustain from one eighth to the next note of that phrase, etc... Sounds kinda convoluted, and I wish I could write it out for you somehow. About the only example I could give you is if you know what a "Flat Tire" drum beat is and how the snare falls on the upbeat, that's what is happening on the 'hiccup" part without the bass drum part.

If you take the individual figures as triplets (in a 4/4 bar) it goes like so:

From the beginning of the bar:

* * Ab * * F# * * Eb * C# B /Ab * Ab C# D Eb C# D Eb C# D Eb/

Each asterisk/rest or note is equal to a triplet quaver and as you can see whole lot adds up to 12 in each bar (4 lots of triplets to a bar).

As easy as falling off a field!

Pulled this out the other day to see what the deal is with this song. To me the solution is clear - get a new drummer. If the drummer can't get it, ain't no one gonna get it! Try not to over analyze it - it's a "feel" thang!

telefunk is right. You gotta feel it. But if you gotta analyze it, the first phrase is accented eighth notes (one AND two AND three AND etc.....) and the other part is eighth note triplets (ONE and, Two la li, THREE la li, FOUR la li).
