I heard a cut off of it on the radio. It was really good.

Plant and Krauss appeared on CMT's "Crossroads" series last night. It was amazing -- the best musical performance I've seen on TV in a long time. I have the CD, but seeing them perform the songs with T-Bone Burnett was a whole different story. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

I watched part of it, but it got old pretty quick to me. I have the CD and I've only listened to it once. Just not my cup of tea. It sounds a bit too much like "lite FM" to me, but that's just to my ears. I like both performers and I thought there was definitely some chemistry there, but it just fell a little short for me. The tune released on the radio "Gone, Gone, Gone" was about the best of the CD - again IMHO!

I can appreciate your opinion Frank. It has an atmospheric treatment that could get old for some. But IMHO, I dig the reverb - tremolo effect that T-Bone and the other guitarist were getting and the drums had a very booming woody sound. Gone, Gone Gone is great and so is Please Read the Letter and Killing the Blues. Shawn Colvin does a great version of that song too.

I watched the whole ‘Crossroads’ on Monday and was disappointed. A.K. seemed a bit not into it and R.P. was great as usual. I saw a T.V. show with A.K. and union station with Vince Gill sitting in and that was mind blowing good stuff. Krauss has an angelic voice and she is used to playing with extraordinary players and the guitar player on this collaboration is very average at best.
She has been working with Jerry Douglas and some other amazing players and this is probably a let down for her. |

This show will re-air Thursday night. Other showtimes are posted at this link as well:

T-Bone, Buddy Miller and Marc Ribot all sounded great to me. The interviews (table side chats) between Plant and Krauss were interesting/entertaining as well.
IMO, this TV concert is a very nice way to celebrate music with your Valentine. Maybe share a bottle of bubbly. Play Stairway to Heaven on vinyl and slow dance in front of the kids. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

I did like T-Bones tones, but he started to sound the same on everything after a short while. The leads were not very impressive and the guy just seemed to be putting 'way too much effort into 'way too little sound. Maybe I listen to Robben too much!(No such thing). Maybe I'll try it again Thursday night and see if I missed something. The wife loves AK. That's a good suggestion to listen to it together. She's also a musician and maybe she'll be able to point something I missed.

I'm sort of with Frank on this. After really digging Gone, Gone, Gone on the radio, I guess my expectations for the rest of the album were too high. Patocaster mentioned a couple other songs which are probably the only other 2 songs that I like also. I find it difficult to listen to the ones with the Country twist...
Thanks for the tv pointer, RW. I will check it out. |

Actually, running through the songs again, the song I really like besides Gone, etc. is Fortune Teller. I dunno, perhaps this is one of those albums that one needs to listen to several times to get the hang of it... |

The show was great, IMO. I could see it again, except for all the damn commercials. If it ever goes to dvd, I'd buy it... |

I'm generalizing, but I think people gravitate toward things that are familiar. New music that sounds like music that is familiar is going to be embraced faster than music that has no personal point of reference.
I think of "Trance Blues" when I listen to this album, although it's not really a Blues album. I think of Otis Taylor and Norah Jones. Look at the commercial success of Norah Jones? There's something similar going on with Raising Sand. The voices are doing instrumental parts, the lyrics don't mean much. They could be singing in French or German and it wouldn't matter to me. I'm curious about the album title. Where did it come from? I like it and it somehow ties back into the "trance" thing for me. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

I can definitely relate to that statement. In my younger years, if the tempo wasn't at least that of Whole Lotta Love, I didn't want to hear it. Actually, it wasn't until about 10 or so years ago that I've started to accept more varied styles of music. I guess I became a born-again rocker. I couldn't believe how much good music I had discarded. I even started listening to and liking genres such as the Blues, Heavy Metal, and Prog-Rock. As much as I've opened up, however, I don't think I'll ever like Country or Rap/Hip-hop... [/i] |
