A few crumbs from the birthday cake would be nice...
Larry Carlton & Robben Ford... U.S. Tour ??? Any word on the shows???

Saw the Robben/Larry show in Chicago last night!!! They came on at show time and played together a few numbers, then Larry took a break and let Robben have the stage for a couple numbers including a smokin' version of Lateral climb. Next Robben took a break and Larry came back for a few numbers including one piece he played by himself, incredible solo piece. Then they came on together and continued to give us more than our moneys worth. What a great show......also what a great rhythm section (travis carlton/gary novak) this is the first time I ever saw Robben play a 335. again amazing show. if I had any complaints it would be the show was too short!! you could see everyone on stage was having a great time as was the audience.

It was indeed a great show in Chicago last night. I had my doubts about this being at a place called "Joe's Bar", but it turned out to be a great venue.
Fairly intimate setting--certainly for artists of this caliber, and a nice floor setup with a mix of chairs out front, and high tables and stools to either side. Very good sound as well. W
e were seated on Robben's side, so we were pretty much getting his guitar sound direct from the amp, while Larry was mostly coming through through the PA, at least on our side. Nice volume balance from all points.
I donned my 9db Westones ear plugs for most of the show to avoid ear fatigue, but the volume level wasn't inappropriate. Incredible guitar tones from both players of course.
And stellar playing from all involved. They clearly are having fun. Larry was amazing and Robben was on fire. I do wish Robben had done more of his vocal tunes, but I'll wait for a return solo visit for that. (He sang Riley B King in addition to Lateral Climb).
It was really a privilege to see these two masters playing together, and Novak and Travis Carlton played wonderfully as well. Loved how Novak interacts with the other musicians.
Slow blues. Funky grooves. High energy fusiony stuff, more blues, etc. It was all good. Great night in Chicago!
And with all the recent complaints about bad experiences with obnoxious flash photographers at recent shows, I'm pleased to report that I didn't notice a single flash going off during the show. Seems like people listened to the pre-show announcement about no pics or recordings being allowed--these folks were there to listen and watch!
Of course, being an audience peppered with guitar geeks, you had a lot of people taking pics of the stage setup and gear *before* the show, which is kind of amusing (OK, I clicked a quick cell phone shot myself).
I saw that Larry's guitar tech (serving as Robben's as well for this show) was very gracious in accommodating questions about the guitars he was tuning up, and even stopped what he was doing to pose for pictures with some of the guitars. Class act.
Lastly, for the fashionistas: Robben was wearing black glasses, a light black T shirt, dark black pants, with medium-rise black boots--kind of a Star Trek original series look going on with the boots and pants.

Yes Blobby its still cold here in Chicago.....although it has been a fairly brutal winter, the night of the show was only around 28 degrees F. You know I was sitting with Maxi at the show and she asked "do ya think Johnny Z is here?" and I replied "no, he would have called to say he was coming...but I bet TeleTom is and I was right, next time lets raise a toast to the show Tom!!!! and get Johnny here as well!! also another fashion note. Larry was in jeans and his shirt was the long sleeve button down wal-mart variety, the cool part was you could tell by the fresh,deep, perfectly square lines that that shirt just came out of its wrapper 15 minutes before show time!!! thank God he's a musical genius.....if ya know what I'm sayin' cheers.

Absolutely. I wish I had been organized enough to put out a "who's going to the show" message ahead of time, but it didn't happen.

My wife noticed exactly the same thing about Larry's shirt! She thought his white tennis shoes might have been brand new too. I think they were coming to Chicago from Minneapolis--there are more than a few Wal Marts between there and here, so maybe he had the bus pull over to do some shopping?
We did luck out on the weather--I think it was supposed to snow in the afternoon and evening which could have made traffic ugly, but after a shower in the morning, it stayed dry.
But overall, it's been a long, cold winter here with much more snow than usual. Hmm, when's the next Robben clinic? Seems like a good time for a return visit to Ojai!

Well i can't help i feel lyrical this evening, here it is 19h45. I've spent a lot of time to download Youtube clips today , ooopss no robben involved ,i was digging my young years , ears : As usual some jimi hendrix, a lot of gems hided, PATTO (with the great ollie halsall , i suspect robben ford to know about this guy), Tommy Bolin then Billy cobham, steve hillage, rory gallahger, gary moore (though i don't get him very much) Jimmie & stevie RV, well ... after that i've been to the movie to catch the last french comedy which was just okay , i smiled , i didn't have any crack up that is poor for a fun movie , but hey we are in france ..... they don't know anymore to make great movies ..........

Yes, of course, I most certainly would've called the Bluenotes if I was going to Chi-town. Perhaps another ear-pleasing event sometime this year.
And, all this looking for me in Chicago talk has me coming up with some catchy/clever band names: Looking For JZ; Is Johnny Here?; It's 420 & Johnny's In Chicago; JZ Lost In Chicago; Bluenote & The Chicago Johnny's.

Blobby - French movies may not be what they used to be, but they still beat the hell out of most of the hollywood garbage over here. I try to fly Air France when I go over your way - food and movies are better by far than the other airlines. A few year ago I caught "Phillipe," with Fabrice and Johnny Halliday - have you seen it? Not a great movie but very clever and amusing. Keep waiting for it to come out on DVD over here.
Oh, sorry, we were talking about Larry's wardrobe. Got off track here...
