I saw Robben at the new and improved Catalina Jazz Club last night. About four years ago they moved a short distance to this much larger place and modernized the whole thing quite a bit. It now seats 235 and is much nicer.

The band was Robben, Toss Panos and Travis Carlton. I was really happy to see Toss there because I really like his playing and I've never seen him live yet.

I saw Daved and had a nice chat about what he's been up to and what's going on in the next few weeks. It's always nice to see you Daved and thanks for the pick!

Robben played the Sakashta, the red 335, and the trusty Tele. He had the standard Dumble rig and along side it was the big Super Reverb, although that didn't get used.

They played two shows. I came for the first show and dinner, but was able to stay for about four tunes of the second show.

The set list (from memory) of the first show was:

How Deep in the Blues
Lateral Climb
Indianola
The Way that You Treated Me
Riley B. King
Don't Deny Your Love
Cannonball Shuffle
Tired of Talking
Peace on My Mind
Lovin' Cup
Too Much

There were some changes in the first four tunes of the second set and at least one new song in there. But this morning it all seems like one show so I'm not exactly sure of what was different.

But, Robben was FULL of energy the whole show. I've noticed that the last couple of times I've seen him he's really been on fire. He's always had great energy but it's been on 11 these past couple of times. Both Toss and Travis sounded great and they all seemed to be very comfortable together. Robben mentioned that they've recently returned from a world tour with Larry so obviously they've been together continuously for awhile now and it showed. They were enjoying themselves rather than having to expend energy concentrating on cues or that kind of stuff. They had the tunes worked out well and they had a good time.

The place was full for the first show and the crowd was very enthusiastic. A great time was had by all. I saw Robben before the show (http://www.online-discussion.com/RobbenFord/viewtopic.php?p=19295#19295) and between the two sets as well. My girlfriend and I took a friend of mine from work and her husband. This was their first Robben experience. They enjoy great music but aren't necessarily blues fans but they were both really impressed. My friend's husband was amazed at Robben's playing. My friend bought a copy of Truth at the show and had Robben sign it. BTW, Daved said they were having a little trouble getting copies to have at the show so if you're going soon you may want to consider brining your own copy if you want to be absolutely sure you have one with you.

Robben never fails to amaze me even though I know what he can do. It was a great evening.

Hi JConstant, thanks for the review! Was there any mention of who might be touring with Robben when he comes to Florida next month? I think Larry Carlton will be touring in Europe and he might need his band back Razz

Toss is a great drummer and lots of fun to watch. I saw Toss play when he toured with Robben a few years ago, around the time Blue Moon was released. I also remember Robben did a show in France where Robert Cray was also on the bill. Ahh, a silly old thread about a Greek fishmonger Laughing

Not too many reviews like that anymore... not many reviews at all

I haven't seen Travis play live, but I loved his performance on the tv show from Germany.

Sorry, RWFTB, I didn't hear anything about it. But you can be sure it will be a great show!

On a side note, Daved told me (if I remember correctly), that he's headed down to FL with ABB.

Robben is a regular at the Coach House. Do you see him when he's there?

I have before, once, back in August of 2006. I didn't know he played their frequently enough to be considered a regular though...I'll have to look into that.

MIMS, that's just Blobby being Blobby. If you want, I can translate using my Blobby Decoder Ring (tm), although I'm sure you'll find the unadulterated Blobby much more entertaining even when you haven't a clue what he's saying. Trust me... Laughing

Ah, so this is going with the stereotype that Frenchmen are drunk at any given time of day?
