At the risk of creating waves of Sunami magnitude, or being told that Robben and I do not comunicate, or that I do not know what I and Robben are talking about or that I am confused , blind, or lying about what sits on my desk right in front of my face... let me return very briefly to the smoking crater and tie up how this whole thing with the "Smokey Signal" pedal worked out on our end.
(You know, I just do not understand how on other forums people can get so vehemently outraged and vindictive and close minded to the actual FACTS that the entire thread needs to get nuked with people running away screaming from the literary mushroom cloud behind them.
Thank you all on THIS forum for having the sense of reality and respect for each other to question and discuss our differences of opinion in a rational, intelligent, adult and SANE way... even if it does require the occasional use of a decoder ring... )
Robben and I had the 'tech day' I set up with him and, when we got to testing the box of pedals, cables, and effects that I had for him to try, I asked him about some of the issues over the "Smokey Signal Pedal" being battled on that 'other' forum...
1) Had he played the "Smokey" before that day?
His response: "No"
2) My response: The argument in progress was that he HAD tested it and LOVED it, possibly better than the Zen.
3) His response: "Some folks need to get a life and learn to live with realty"... his quote, not mine... while pursing his lips with a disgusted look as he rolled his eyes.
Robben then told me that when Sakashta showed him the pedal he DID (as I stated to everyone at the time that he often does) plug it in and hit a couple of chords to see if it was worth going any further. He told me he felt the pedal DID sound very good and that he told Taku that he WOULD like to give it a try when he had more time to give it a fair evaluation... the same thing he HAS, and DOES, done with many OTHER pedals, FX, and amps... but that was all he had done and that as far as HE was concerned, two or three chords is NOT to be considered actually playing or fully testing anything before issuing a valid verdict or fully honest and informed opinion.
We then plugged it in and fully tested it, playing it for several minutes whilst trying different settings and A/B-ing it with other pedals.
His verdict... it is an excellent pedal and he asked me to put in our "box-o'-tricks" in case he ever found a use for it down the road and that he would highly recommend it to anyone he felt might have a use for it.
BUT tho it is a very nice pedal, which he MIGHT be willing to use in an emergency if a Zen pedal was not available, it is NOT his everyday thing... asking me to store it and plug his Zen back in.
Please note that everyone who has seen him since can attest to the fact that the Zen, at least as far as Robben is concerned, is STILL the top sheriff in town.
Then we moved on to more important and relevent issues... _________________ B C-ing U!

Thanks for the update - although I feel as though you shouldn't have had to.
This thread really encapsulates what I hate about The Gear Page - I've learnt a lot about equipment and manufacturers from hanging out there, but ultimately there are so many people on there with no manners or class about them, that I want to go there less and less (it's noticeable that the monster pro players and great equipment manufacturers who post there are usually the nicest guys). There seems to be this overwhelming desire amongst some of the posters to 'get one up on' other people to make themselves feel better. Music is supposed to be an art form - enjoyable for those making it and those listening to it, not some kind of battle to see who can 'out-gear' the next guy. They don't seem to understand 'real life' and be able to filter things through it.
From what I've seen, most pro players aren't looking for the ultimate in equipment...they just want something that doesn't get in the way of the creative process i.e. is easy to get a sound that they are happy with and is reliable, rather than being some kind of 'must-have' holy grail to enable them to get their sound.
Ultimately it's about the music, rather than the equipment. I'd rather listen to someone like Robben playing through a Peavey transistor amp and a Boss SD1 than a lot of these tone snobs through their mega-expensive boutique set-ups. It's a bit like the debate about mp3 or CD quality over vinyl - maybe vinyl does sound better but what did we all do 25 yrs ago? - bought the vinyl album and then copied it onto a cassette and listened to it in the car - terrible quality, but we still enjoyed the music because that was what it was all about.
