I love Robben's tone and know that speakers are an important component. Can you tell me if the Celestion 65s he uses would also work well in a 2x12 combo amp (Fender Hot Rod Deville) or if these are best in a 4-speaker set up?
Thanks in advance!
Ed

Well, a lot of persons use them in a 2x12 configuration, like Robben does (so do I !), they work really well like that.

My understanding was that Robben uses a 4x12 cab. Not true?

Pierre,
Please tell me what you like about them, what your experience has been.

Just replaced a Vintage 30 with the new G12-65 in my 1982 Fender (Rivera) Concert. I'm quite surprised at how good this speaker is. I didn't really expect much difference and did this only because I saw that Robben is using this speaker now. But in a single speaker, open back combo this is a winner. Reminds me of a Greenback but with more headroom. Great tone/clarity/breakup - thumbs up from me...

No he uses a 2x12.

What I love about the G12-65s ?
Mine are old ones, not the reissue by the way.
They are not harsh yet have a good hi end content, which makes them good for both clean and overdriven tones.
Those are rather mid heavy speakers, but they are not dark, as the Red White Blues from Eminence can be for instance.
Bottom end is good too, and tight, which is a must for me.

In my opinion, they are perfect speakers for jazz, blues, funk, and classic rock tones.

Has anyone tried a rear ported cab similar to the Dumble, besides the speakers I'm sure that's a big part of the tone as Two Rock seem to have cloned this (see the cabinets on their website) too. I managed to get 4 old G12 65's recently (from an old Marshall JCM800 cab, worth checking out if it's late 70's as I think that's when they were fitted, before the move to G12 75's) and will be building two into a 2x12 upright cab with two back panels, one closed and one with the oval ported design.
