I hear them like this:

||Ab Eb | Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 |
| Ab Eb |Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 | Ab/Bb |

Chorus:
|Ab/Eb Eb | Cm7 Eb/Bb | Cm7 Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 |
| Ab F7/A | Eb/Bb Bdim Cm7 | Ab | Ab/Bb |

Solo vamp starts with Bdim and goes to [: Cm7 | F9 :]
vamp stops | Ab/Bb | and goes to start...

I did not check the voicings, though. F7/A is more or less interchangeable with Adim of F/A.

These are fingerings I would use for some chords(string number from the top in parenthesis):
G7#5 : Eb(2) B (3) F (4) G (6)
Ebadd9/G : Eb(2) Bb (3) F (4) G (6)
F7sus4 : C (2) Bb(3) Eb (4) F (6)
Ab/Bb : Eb(2) C (3) Ab (4) Bb (6)

Hi Sampo, thanks to you too; I think that your version is reasonably playble but IMHO we must consider two important things:

1) Robben plays this song using fingerpcking technique and so it's very basilar the line of basses, isn't? In this song we can see the development of a decreasing basses’s line in the Key of Ab Major and for this reason chords like Ab/Bb ( Ab9th) must be played taking the AB on the bass and the 9th (Bb) at the first string ( 6 fret)

2) take there's a lack in the chorus, that's:
you wrote
Chorus:
|Ab/Eb Eb | Cm7 Eb/Bb | Cm7 Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 |
| Ab F7/A | Eb/Bb Bdim Cm7 | Ab | Ab/Bb |

but perhaps it is right so:

|Ab/Eb Eb | Cm7 Eb/Bb | Ab9 Eb/Bb|Cm7 Ebadd9/G| Bdim Cm7 |
| Ab F7/A | Eb/Bb Bdim Cm7 | Ab | Ab/Bb |

What do you think about my comments?

Cheers!

Hi Robbentony!! You're correct about point 2) -- I made mistake when I entered the chords from paper, chorus goes definitely like this:

|Ab/Eb Eb | Cm7 Eb/Bb | Ab Eb/Bb|Cm7 Ebadd9/G| Bdim Cm7 |

I do disagree on couple of points, first I hear song in Eb major (not Ab). On Ab/Bb chord, I hear it as Bb dominant seventh sus 4 - I hear melody note of the voicing Robben plays as Eb, not Bb fifth above. And bass plays Bb, I hear.

Also Ab9 implies dominat 9 sound to me, and I don't hear Gb there. So it's either Ab or Abadd9.

Again, I could be wrong.

Thanks, Sampo

Hi Sampo, thank you very much for your competent advices; it's really possible that i could be wrong too, but remembering the teaching of Socrates (Majeutica):
"I talk with others to reach the truth because i know that i don't know"

I'm a self-taught and so I don't know the musical theory of building chords. Being an instinctive player, I try to find the right chords in Robben's songs starting from the bass line and then building the complete chords relying on my personal intuition and taste ( that may go surely wrong manytimes).
So i'll later check again the bass line of the song to compare it with your theory (thanks again for this!!!!) and then i'll confess my sins (and you must forgive me Evil or Very Mad ).
My name is Tony
PS: next song i'll try to transcribe will be "Tell me i'm your man" 'cause i love it. Could you help me?

Hi Sampo, I agree to you and your transcription of chords is perfect for me.Compliments again!!!!

But I’m thinkin’ that you forgot a chord (Eb) in the verse (when, in the first part, it goes to … town and, in the second part, goes to… glad .

That’s:
You wrote

||Ab Eb | Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 |
| Ab Eb |Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 | Ab/Bb |

I hear the song in this way:

||Ab Eb | Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Eb |Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 |
| Ab Eb |Ab/Eb Eb Bb/D | Cm7 G7#5 | Cm7 Eb/Bb |
| Ab Eb |Ebadd9/G | Bdim Cm7 | Ab | F7sus4 | Ab/Bb |

What do you think about?

Bongofury, with this chords you can easy sleep on it. Sampo gaves us the Key. I saw that the intro of the song posted by Michael and it's transcribed in the Key of D instead of the original Eb. With his transcription we could complete the work for good!

I hope to write Robben’s other chords transcriptions with the help of Sampo!

Yes, you're absolutely right. The original is in Eb.
After reading the editors text again, i see that the editor wanted to do a more or less unplugged version of it to use open strings and/or chords to play it outside in summer. Razz

@ Sampo: Great job on your transcription!!!!

Michael, if you upload the scanned pages to Photobucket or a similar image hosting site that generates the code for you, you can easily post images on this forum. You may have to change the size of the image so that it displays properly, but it is also easy to do from the edit menu in Photobucket.

I don't have the CD with me now, but I am pretty sure it does not have Eb chord there and it would result one extra measure that way. The passage is bit tricky to me, because of upbeats the Ebadd9/G and Bdim chords are played. However, Eb and Ebadd9/G are basically same chord, the latter has third in bass instead.

Thanks for the youtube link, BTW. I think Robben plays those riffs and fills very Hendrix-like (which I guess is derived somewhat from Curtis Mayfield)-- I haven't thought it like that before. Anyway, the opening phrase goes something like this (from memory):

E---------------------------------------------------------I
B---------------------------------rake------------------I
G-----------------------8---------8----------------------I
D-----------------------8-----------8--------------------I
A------------------6----8-h-10-------10--8---6-6----I
E------4----6\8------------------------------------------I

Also I think that instead of G7#5 at 3rd position Robben plays G augmenteted triad without seventh (f); Eb(3) B (4) G (5).

It's great song, with awesome harmony that mixes some gospel and R'n'B. I think would be great to hear Robben play solo over verse and chorus changes!

I agree, I'd love to hear this song performed solo (without a band).

So, has there been any agreement on the changes? Seems like everyone is still working on it!

I'll try to make a concerted effort to nail these changes, this week. But, if someone already has it, please save me some work! Laughing

And, PLEASE, share your Voicings for it. I think that's a key area to nail in this tune.

These are voicings I would use for verse (optional/additional notes are inside brackets). Think Keef Richards while playing hammer ons on Ab/Eb.

E---------------------------------------------------------I
B---------------------------------rake------------------I
G-----------------------8---------8----------------------I
D-----------------------8-----------8--------------------I
A------------------6----8-h-10-------10--8---6-6-----I
E------4----6\8------------------------------------------I

E----ho-----ho-----ho----------------I-----------------I
B---8--9---8-9---8-9-----8----(11-)-I--8-------8---- I-
G---8------8-------8-------8-----10--I--8-------8 ----I
D---8-10--8-10--8-10----8-----8---I--8-------9-----I
A----------------------------------------I----------10----I
E--(11)-------------------(11)---10--I--8--------------I

E-----------(8-)-----I-----------I----------I------I------I
B---8-------8-------I--4----4--I--6---8---I--4--I--1---I
G---8-------8-------I--5----3--I--7---8---I--5--I--3---I
D---8-------8-------I--6----3--I--6---8---I--6--I--1---I
A--------------------I--(6)------I----------I-(6)--I------I
E--- 8-------6-------I--4----3--I--7---8---I--4--I--1---I

Chorus is pretty much same voicings. Climb Ab F7/A Eb/Bb Bdim Cmin7 goes something like this:

E-----------I------------I
B---4---3--I-8---6-(8-)-I
G---5---5--I-8---7--8--I
D---6---3--I-8---6--8--I
A--(6)------I------------I
E--- 4---5--I-6---7--8--I

Climb from F7sus4 to Ab/Bb:
E----------------------I
B---1-------------4---I
G---3-------------5---I
D---1-------------6---I
A----------------------I
E----1--1-3-4-5--6---I

I don't have guitar or recording with me now, so I cannot do any proof reading now. But I hope this helps!

If memory serves, that's almost how it was played during Robben's stop in Chicago on the Robben/Larry tour earlier this year. I believe this was one of the songs played while Larry was offstage. Robben started it off with basically just voice and guitar--the band (i.e. just drums and bass) joined in later.

Hearing Robben play those soulful chords--just him and his Tele (turned up loud, but played quietly, if you know what I mean) filling up the otherwise dead-quiet room. It was really something.

I love that song--my wife *really* loves that song.
