Hello Daved,
I would like to offer some info on this subject. I have read some of the other posts about tone on this site and my knowledge of tone is a belief that it is subjective. I have to agree with Daved about the quasi realm it relates to. I believe the artist expresses his inner spirit through the instrument and that coupled with the wood of the instrument share the output that equal what is called tone.
My experience and knowledge of TUNE is easier to explain. Tuning a guitar is a matter of physics, and that controls the output of your instrument.
The finite length of any string tensioned to the desired note, or frequency is a tuned condition. There are many tuners to check the frequency of the note you are tuning. The most accurate are the strobe tuners.
Why can't Johnny tune his guitar ?
The main reason is the placements of the frets.
The parallel alignment of frets can not allow a fretted instrument to produce the correct pitch at all fret positions. The only possible tuned strings are open tuned and tuned at the octave. That means you have 12 notes at pitch and the rest are sharp or flat , and some notes are as much as 1/4 semitone out of pitch.
The next reason is a simple deduction, the fret is raised above the flat fretboard 3/64 th's of an inch ( 1.8 MM ) . The pressure to note the string at any given fret is more or less depending on where you are playing on the fingerboard. You can easily see this happen when you have a strobe tuner and see the note will be pushed to a sharper frequency always. That can help your note if you are on a fret that is a little flat !, but there are many note already sharp. Float like a butterfly over the fretboard ?
The next condition is structural failure from the neck and body of the instrument. The strings at pitch are compressing the wood of the neck and body enough that the tuning will change to a flat condition. The truss rod keeps the neck from bowing somewhat, but the body yields to the pull.
I will close for now. _________________ The vulgarity of money has to be discussed eventually. |

"Why can't Johnny tune his guitar ?"
Now that's just plain rude. I always thought our JohnnyZ did a pretty good job of tuning his guitar! No personal attacks please! |

Hello JohnnyZ,
I did not intend to direct "Why can't Johnny tune his guitar ? " at you personally, if you took it personally please forgive me !
The phrase was used a lot of time to describe failings in teaching of our young students, circa 1980.
The post I did was my first and I wish to explain the guitar problems to the artists and players. It is about time that guitars are rescued from the abuse of out of tune notes. The information I give is technical but I will explain as easy a method as I can to get the truth to the players. _________________ The vulgarity of money has to be discussed eventually. |

AT, know that there's a Blobby (BlueLobster) Decoder Ring (BDR tm) which I happen to have the dubious and whacked-out pleasure to own. I try my best to decypher for the forum crowd, but there are times when the ring explodes before software updates. Be patient; be humorous; be light; and, enjoy just being here! |

Very well put, JaZ. I often wonder how to briefly, but accurately, explain this sites atmosphere to newcomers whose first experiences are a little, shall we say... intense?
I think you've summed it up well. _________________ B C-ing U!

Thanks, Daved. Perhaps, "Be patient; be humorous; be light; and, enjoy just being here! " should be required reading for newcomers, and at times, oldtimers too!
