Robben Ford Discussion

Hello guys, I am a newby to this forum. Am currently working on Robben's version of this classic " Keep on Runnin " and cant quite get the right chord inversions that he is playing on his tune..

Has anyone tabbed this one with Robben's interpretation and chords.

I tried to transcribe it but i had the same problem : I can't get the chords that Robben uses and that gives so much power to his version of this song. Sorry

the other question about this song is : may it sound without horns??? what do you think? Has someone already seen Robben play it live?

I saw him play it live on the tour after the album was released.

It was a 4-piece band: Robben, Hilary on drums, Dwayne Pate on bass, and Bob Malach on sax.

So, with one horn rather than a horn section, but it certainly sounded great. The driving rhythm guitar part is key to the Robben version--if you cop that, I think it could work without horns.

Here's how I hear it, we play this in my band, sounds fine in a 3-piece (to my aging ears anyhow :-)

(I assume we're talking about the intro/break part, RF just plays part chords on beats 2, 3 & 4 for most of the rest. I'll post these if you want?

first bar the chords are all on the 'ands', second bar the chords are on beats 2,3 and 4

Hi Ron S, thanks for the intro bit, I have this pretty down pat, the problem is the verse \ chorus \ bridge chord inversions. Whilst on paper, you think a fairly standard Key of G progression however, when listening and playing, the subtleties and chord inversions he is using are quite difficult to nail.

Not sure if he is only playing root\5 or 3\5 chords, just hard to nail.. Your interpretation would be great.

Also, what chords\notes is he playing over the lead progressions in your oppinion?

Madsam: I'll do my best on this but I've had to rush through (going on hols in a few hours, lots to prepare!!) I play my own interpretation of the chords in the band so haven't ever sat down and tried to get them note for note.

Here's the chords to the verse (AFAICT) I've just given the chords not the rhythm, as the rhythm is a lot easier to work out. They are mostly triad chords (no root/5ths alone that I can hear).
