Found this on youtube - towards the end of the clip you can see Robben Ford trading licks with George Duke.

Robben never recorded an "official" album while he was with Miles, but a few years ago there was a big box set of Miles live at Montreux over the years, and one of the disks (or part of one) was this band, possibly even the same gig this clip was from (I heard a bootleg which has this exact performance, but I'm unsure if it was from that CD box set or not.) Robben plays a couple of absolutely killer solos, especially over the second track, I think (maybe "Splatch"? - not sure of the title), which has this fantastic surging drum groove that the soloists play over.
The recording suffers, though, in my opinion, from the absolutely horrible synthesizer patch that George Duke plays on his solos. I usually love George's playing, but on this set his playing is utterly obnoxious, and today it really sounds dated. You have to kind of wince and wait for his solos to pass.
Unfortunately, the box set has 20 CDs and costs a fortune, and they are not sold separately. There's a "best of" single CD condensation taken from these but I think there's only one track with Robben on it. |

Robben's performance is on the 11th cd of the collection.
The songs are:
-Theme from Jack Johnson
-New Blues
-Maze
-Human Nature
-Wrinkle
-Tutu
-Splatch
He plays in all of them. |

There was also TV broadcast of this performance in Montreux july 1986. I'm glad I have it with stereo sound. I think it's 110 minutes. One of my favourites.

Thank you for the links to this performance! I had not seen nor heard anything that Robben had done in his time with Miles. Great bit of time capsule of 2 terrific artists, in very different periods of their careers. I am intrigued that their paths crossed, and this bit is still here for us to enjoy.
Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks, Henkholland for posting the Miles Davis/Robben Ford clips.
Does anybody know anything about the strat the Robben was playing? What about the pickups he had in it (two are black and one is white)? Great tone the strat has coming out of the Dumble. |

Hey Henk , great link, unfortunately i am not connected in DSL so download is failing everytime. I might know someone who owns it yet.
For what i remember when Robben played in Nice with Miles Band , he was playing Mesa Boogie with a Mesa 4X12, & the sunburst stratocaster.
As for pick ups i don't know if it is true but one told me at one period Robben was swapping pick ups a lot of time. _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |
