or dead, who would they be, and why?
Just a Friday afternoon diversion. My daughter is filling out college apps and one of them includes writing an essay on this subject (substitute famous person for guitarist, though). Thought it might be a hoot on a Friday afternoon. My picks:
Freddie King - because he is the man as far as I am concerned.
Charlie Christian - he (almost) started it all - plug in and play!
Duane Allman -I have always wanted to know what was going on inside his head when he was playing the outro solo on "Loan me a Dime."
RF - because this is his forum (and he sounds like a a truly nice and interesting person) |

It would be interesting to listen to B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Mike Bloomfield talk about their careers in retrospect. Reminisce about jam sessions at Cafe Au Go Go or the Generation. I admire all four and I think they had mutual respect for each other as well during the 60s.
Dinner with Robben, Jorma and Ruthie would also be fun I'd invite Blob to come along too. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Skip the dead ones. They wouldn't make for very lively company in my group, which would include:
Robben
B.B. King
Les Paul
Buddy Guy
You didn't mention other musicians we could invite over to join the guitarists. I'm sending out my invites to Charlie Musselwhite, Marcia Ball, Pinetop Perkins, Mark Ford, Pat Ford, Janiva Magness, and Anne Kerry Ford.
We gonna' pitch that wang dang doodle all night long! _________________ - BlueRunner |

I'm working on my list. However, I HAVE had (lunch or) dinner with:
Tommy Tedesco (lunch)
Scott Henderson (lunch)
Frank Gambale (lunch)
Jon Herington from Steely Dan (many lunches and dinners. I even had all of Steely Dan over my house for dinner, with the exception of Donald and Walter--that was very cool)
Yes, Robben Ford (a couple lunches and a fantastic dinner in 2004!) |

Alright, Jack, time to share some stories.
For example, lunch with Henderson MUST have been entertaining? |

Henderson and Gambale were during my days at GIT in '83-'84. My first six months, Gambale was a student and then he was a special lab instructor. Henderson was there as a lab instructor the entire time I was there. Anyway, there was many occasions where you'd be hang out in the lunch room, well, having lunch. Whether it was Scott, Frank, Joe Diorio, Jeff Berlin, etc., you'd eat lunch and shoot the shit with these guys. You were just hanging out and eating--it was no big deal.
Tom Tedesco was also when I was at GIT. Part of the deal is that one time during the school year 2-3 guys would go with Tommy to a "real" session (I got to sit behind him during a session for the TV show Falcon Crest). Then he'd take you out to lunch. He was a really funny guy--kind of a ball-buster and always telling a story. It was great.
Jon Herington is a freind. I met him through Guy Hedrick (from Guytron) years ago. I sponsored a couple clinics with Jon and got to know him. Now, every time Steely Dan comes to Detroit, Jon hangs out at my house before the show. We play around with amps/guitars and hang out. Then I get to go to sound check and I get back-stage passes. I've done this half a dozen times. When I travel to NYC, I often try to hook up with Jon. Last month, I was in NYC and we went to dinner and checked out a band at a Jazz club.
I've known Robben since my days at GIT. I ate lunch with him at GIT and also hung out and had drinks with him at a club in LA. I've also had lunch at a couple clinics over the years. In 2004, I sponsored a clinic in Detroit and afterwards, we went out to dinner. It was just me, him and my drummer. We hung our for a couple hours and it was really cool. |
