I've been on a Wayne Krantz kick lately, finding some things he played on:
Blue Corner by Jasper van't Hof
Low Blow by Victor Bailey
Next Exit by Jay Anderson

I find it's easier to carry around my iPod and interface that with the car radio. Lately, I've been listening to:
Bryan Lee - Crawfish Lady
Rev. Horton Heat - Revered Organdrum
Little Walter - His Best
Maria Muldaur's Music For Lovers
Otis Redding - Otis Blue
Sonny Landreth - Grant Street
Charlie Musselwhite - Sanctuary
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Delta Moon - Howlin'
I'm anxious to get the new Sonny Landreth CD "From The Reach" with Robben on 2 cuts! _________________ You got a motor like a brand new car.... |

Not in my car yet, but I've just ordered the following new releases:
McCoy Tyner - "Guitars"
"This recording is a studio throw-down with 5 of popular music's most accomplished string specialists: Derek Trucks, Bela Fleck, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, and Marc Ribot."
I caught a cut on the radio yesterday, Coltrane's "Mr P.C." featuring John Scofield; great stuff.
David Glaser - "Cars & Lovers"
"An award winning songwriter/guitarist from Baltimore, David has been recording and playing live music from the 70's forward, either as a solo artist, a band member, or a side man . Recently David has been making his presence felt as a solo artist in the New Folk scene, with emphasis on acoustic music and songwriting."
I was pulled in by the tune, "I Keep Your Picture In My Car," which has a distinctive bluegrass feel to it. Lots of fine acoustic pickin'

The Essential Rory Gallagher
Listening to a "Sunday Morning Blues" radio program a few weeks ago this catchy tune was played which caught my curiosity. It was Laundromat by Rory Gallagher. I've heard of RG but knew nothing about him and his music. Well, Laundromat made me look him up on cdnow and this latest 2-cd compilation which came out last year seemed like it would be a good intro. So far, it's great! I'm still stuck on the 1st cd. I love this guy's style. Another one for the "why haven't I heard of him before?" category. And also, another one who died much too young...
I noticed that there are a few Rory Gallagher dvd's. Any recommendations? _________________ Soul on Eleven |

JZ,
I saw Rory once, as a 3-piece band, back in the late 70's in central Iowa, opening for Kansas.
Great performer who energetically worked the stage and audience, blending a variety of styles... jazz, blues, country, etc... into his heavily ROCK playing.
I was extremely impressed and thoroughly enjoyed his hour onstage.
At one point he broke into this great electrically-classical styled piece, playing solo on electric guitar for several minutes.
I have been searching thru his albums ever since, almost 30 years now, unsuccessfully trying to find a recording of the piece he played that night.
No luck yet... ... but I keep trying. _________________ B C-ing U!

Rory was great - he was doing the unplugged thing years before it was hip, mandolin, acoustic guitar, harp, then he would crank up his AC30 with his crapped out strat...
Best record/cd: Live in Europe. Listen the opening licks to "Messin' with the Kid" and you will never be the same again. Great stuff. |

Joe Bonamassa's new album- The Ballad of John Henry.
Many reviewers, and Joe himself, claim this is his best work and I have to agree. I'm on my 3rd time through listening, and it just gets better and better. The guy has definitely "matured" in his music... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

"The Jackson Five's Greatest Hits." Picked it up for $2 at a going-out-of-business Circuit City last week while on a business trip, and ever since have been driving around with the bass turned all the way up on the car player listening to every cut that has James Jamerson on it. What was it about Jamerson that makes you sing along with the bass part? At the top of your lungs? Despite the weird looks you get from the folks who pull up next to you at stoplights? _________________ - BlueRunner |

Ruthie Foster - The Truth According to Ruthie Foster.
Pure and soulful. Highly recommended.
(not to mention, Robben is the guitarist on the whole thing) _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

Just picked up the Ruthie disc yesterday. So far, enjoying it very much. Robben's playing is tasty as always, and Ruthie sounds great. |

Moontan by Golden Earring. Was browsing in a "record" store when the background music caught my attention many different times. The flute, and the hooks and grooves changes were wild and different. At first I thought it might be some Tull that I never heard of. At the checkout, I learned it was Golden Earring, the Radar Love one-hit wonder. I asked to look at the cd but a person minutes ahead of me snatched it up (it was the only copy in the store, and it was used). I found and bought it online. It starts out with Radar Love (not a bad tune) and follows with only 4 other songs each roughly 6-8 minutes long and none sounding at all like Radar Love. I'm particularly stuck on tracks 4 and 5.. _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Technically, it's not a CD in my car at the moment, but it will be as soon as I can get home tonight and download the new Matt Schofield CD from iTunes and burn it. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

Two CDs by guitar and ukulele maestro Bill Tapia. Got to hear him a few weeks ago at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. 101 years old! Gotta' figure out his secret. (Actually, one of his secrets is that he gave up smoking when he was in his 80's. So I guess I have to take up the habit so that I can give it up, too!) _________________ - BlueRunner |
