So the band was so much more focused and jamming tonight. There were some grooves that were just killer. Robben was his normal genius self. That man can play guitar and sing!!

The Way That You Treated Me grooved for days. Hillary (Drums) and Duane (Bass) were just in the zone along with Robben. They even changed keys in the middle of the solos...started in D, when to C, then back D....very Cool.

Encore tunes were Badge and Nothing to Nobody...both stellar. During Nothing to Nobody this guy came out of the audience with bongo drums and sat down next to the stage and just grooved with the band. Again another absolutely killer groove with extended jamming.

My head is still spinning.....They played so many great tunes:

Can't remember the order...

Indianola
Up The Line
Keep on Running
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Over My Head
Lovin' Cup
Cannonball Shuffle
It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)
The Way That You Treated Me

I am missing a few.

Got a chance to speak with Robben after the show. I gave him a print out of the Forum front page. And he was like...Can I take this with me. So who knows, maybe Robben will join up here in the near future. I know we're going to get a live chat with the man himself early next year.

Got to hang with Daved before the and after the show. Great seeing you again Daved!

Ok now I need to go to bed..I am flying out to SF first thing in the moring........

But wait...I need to do a fashion update for Elizabeth!!!

Black T-shirt
Blue Jeans
Black Cowboy Boots

I guess that's the Denver look.....

Good night all!

Very Happy

As you can see, the band has changed by 2 members since returning last month from 7 weeks in Europe. So now they have to aquaint with each other artisticly and then adapt and adjust to the musical entity that will evolve from this particular combination of unigue musical elements and personalities.

In this regard the first night was tough on them all, but most especially Hilary as, altho the band and gear was scattered and strewn around the stage because of "show placements", Hil was Isolated from the band and audience, way in back in a clear plexiglas booth. So they all had to begin to "know each other" from a distance, so to speak.

The next chance to perform together comes the next afternoon when they find themselves playing live, cramped together in a bathroom size room at a radio station, playing on unfamiliar studio gear (by the way, for the FYI of those who heard the show, Robben played the Baker straight into an inhouse Fender DeVille, one setting, no channel swithching, no FX), under headphones.... not particularly condusive to 'musical bonding'.

Finally, that night, the 1st real show. They were a little stiff to begin, finding their footings. There were a few minor, but enevitable stumbles, both with song and gear.

But then, things began to click and jell amongst the band. As Robben repositioned himself onstage several times to alter his personal mixes, he listened to the elements as they started to come together. I noted Robben cheerfully interfaced with the audience (Even threatening with a smile to "Sic his 8 foot gorilla on whoever was flash photographing him, if they didn't cut it out!"). I could see he was liking and getting comfortable with what he heard and felt onstage.

At one hour and ten minutes Robben finished the set, thanked the audience and left the stage. I quickly followed the band to the dressing room and pointed out the time. Some how, the show had just gone so quickly & comfortably for Robben that he had mistakenly gotten the impression that this was a shorter show like the first two. Realizing his mistake he, of course, wanted to do some more but the new band, with basically only a couple of soundchecks to start getting all this together, hadn't had time to learn and arrange more tunes yet.

While Robben played "Badge", the scheduled encore number, I quickly put together a list of possible songs this configuration of musicians might know.

Robben chose, "Nothing To Nobody". The song started and suddenly it all came together for the band. They found their voice, they found their language, they found their groove as Robben directed their way through an impromptu, nearly 20 minute jam of dynamics and solos.

All day at soundcheck, and then thru the show, we were plagued with an inhouse, low end acoustic rumble on stage. I don't know how apparent it was in the house.
It became especially bad during that song when the band was beginning to communicate with each other.
Robben got the idea, that since the rumble seemed to be frequency sympathetic, to try changing the key while they explored their soloing... thus the key modulation. Robben directed the band back to the original key just before he broke into the final vocal of the song.
And, it worked!! Not only did it cure the feedback problem, but it also became a "way cool" excercise in bonding for them to be mutually proud of.

At soundcheck, they chose to do this song because they all were familiar with it, and they hadn't yet had a chance to work up Moonchild Blues

Robben forgot to bring his stageclothes with him from the Hotel in Boulder, so he had to go "street". I told him he looked great, very earthy, very mountain. He laughed and said he felt very weird.

So let's see... We got a short show and "street clothes." Perhaps we should have gotten a discounted ticket price.

The band was great, but I was pretty surprised that the show was so short.

I was sitting near the back of the room, dead center with the stage, the mix sounded very good, didn't hear any rumble. I'll admit that I was listening through my Westone musician's ear plugs (gotta watch that tinitus problem!), but the vocals were a bit low in the mix to my ear -- but that may have been due to the plugs, which kill more highs than lows.

I usually expect higher volume levels on Robben's vocals...
Ah well, he is a consumate professional, and I trust his judgment on recordings and during live performances.

Only Robben would think of a 'key change' to compensate for low end rumble!!!! What a guy!!!!

So let's see, Joe... There were clocks mounted, facing the stage, in the P.A. overheads. So I know that you got EXACTLY a 90 minute show, Robben's standard length show. Not to mention that the house had a disco going on after we finished, so they were pretty insistant on a set time schedule to accomodate their later crowd.
And it matters that Robben wasn't wearing a 'costume'? Awww, c'mon now, Joe! Wink
Perhaps you got exactly what you paid for. Sorry if you were disappointed.

Yes, talking with band members the next day, everyone thought it worked out pretty cool, both technically & artisticly.

Hey no problem - I wasn't disappointed. The music was great. And I liked watching the band members figure things out on the fly there - it reminded me of my band - it made me feel more professional Smile.

We usually have to play three 1-hour sets on our gigs, so I guess I'm used to a loooong show.

Now when are you coming to Austin?!?!

Great! Glad you had fun, Joe.

This wasn't your usual "Okay, so we're locked in the groove of repetition because we've been on the road for 6 months doing the same thing over and over everynight, " kind of show.

So I told those "backstage tales" as I thought you all might enjoy a little insight into the unseen, behind the curtains going on's which, to me anyway, made this a uniquely special show in the overall grand scheme of things.

Now knowing some of this, did you notice Robben's "Hey, so things go wrong... I'm here to have some fun and I hope you are, too" relaxed attitude and rapport with both band, crew, & audience through out the evening? That is one of the reasons I especially enjoy working with Robben over some of the other artists I have been associated with.

Yes Daved,

You could hear the rumble in the audience. I have been to the Soiled Dove 3xs now. 2xs when I was playing there myself and Monday night at the Robben show. Every time I have experienced that rumble sound.

They have these big woofer 4x15s on the floor on each side of the stage. I was seated right in front of one Monday night. Anyway, when the sound guy turns those woofers up too loud you get that annoying bass rumbling sound.

For about 1/2 of the show every time Dewanye hit a note on his low B string it was like an earthquake. About halfway through the show they turned them way down and everything sounded just right. But it was annoying! Was that the house sound man?

But hey, I was hypnotized by the band. They had some great moments! And I am sitting like 10 feet from Robben...so you know I am having an enlightening experience rumble or no rumble...

Daved,

I love the 'behind the scenes' stuff. In fact, I like that kind of stuff so much that I'll watch shows like 'Behind The Music' even when they are profiling bands I don't like. But to hear these kinds of tidbits about Robben and his band is simply the best. Thanks for sharing.
