I'm listening to this CD this morning and I was just thinking what a great CD this is (both song, singing and playing).
I remember when it came out, I really found it refreshening and strongly approved of Robbens new musical style.
Then Blue Moon came out and I didn't like it that much. I didn't dislike it either. I just didn't.
Keep on Running is more in line with Supernatural, but Supernatural has more style.
(maybe it's just better for a Sunday morning! )

I find Supernatural Robben's best solo album so far. It has everything to me. Nice songwriting, nice vocals and guitar playing to die for! _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

When I first heard Supernatural I was really turned off by it. It sounded like a pop/r&b album to me.. I was only familiar with Handfull of Blues and the Blues Collection albums at that time. I was expecting another "blues" album.. Needless to say, I was really disapointed.
But since then, I have really learned to appreciate Robben as a fellow musician, and as a person (from what I know of him).. and appreciate all of his styles and abilities. I've collected over 25 of his albums. From The Charles Ford Band, Jimmy Witherspoon, Charle Musselwhite, Yellowjackets, on up to the Blue Line stuff, and Jing Chi, etc I love every one of them.
Out of all of them, I think Supernatural is the most well thought out, most well rounded album. It really is a masterpiece. I guess the best way to describe it for me is.. "it's easy to listen to". One of those albums you put on, and before you know it, it's over... It took me a while to warm up to it. Now it will always be one of my favorites..
Robben could make just about any flavor of album, and I'd enjoy it.. It might take me a while to fully appreciate it... but there is no doubt that eventually I would. In the mean time, I'm waiting for that Cajun/Reggae album.. lol

a polka, waltz, accordian, or Hawaiian disc???? Seriously, I WOULD like to hear him do a Cajun, Reggae, or Surf tune, as I love those.
I always tear up (been known to even start crying...what a wuss!) when I hear him do, "Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues," because that was one of many Cole Porter songs my mother sang to me at night. Some day, Robben will sing a private concert for me and sing my mom's FAVORITE song...I still can't sing it without choking up. His voice is perfect, a little acoustic, and I could overdose on musical bliss! A few years ago, I couldn't get to one of his shows, because I had to visit one of my students in the hospital. I e-mailed Dal, asking if Robben would come to Pleasanton to sing for my birthday, but I never got a response.
I have heard Robben say that Supernatural is his least selling album. (Doesn't look grammatically right, but who cares...it's Sunday!) That astounds me...or maybe not.
I think I am proud of the fact that what I like is rarely well received by the masses. (It is the same for political candidates, movies, art, and even the French and their cities!)

It took me a few listens to really start to dig it and now I think its clearly one of his best albums ever! The first time through I thought, "where the heck is all the guitar?" But the more I listened to it the more I heard the guitar and everything else that was going on. Without a doubt, a fantastic recording!

... which is one of the reasons I really like it, because the guitar is not so much "in your face" but integrated throughout. And why I really enjoyed his show in Berlin last fall with Bob Malach - he got to play behind another player and was not "on" all the time. If you only focus on his lead playing you are really missing out on so much more that is going on. That's why in my book he is a "complete" guitarist. |

I love to hear Robben's comping. He is one of the best rhythm players I've ever heard. He also has a great book on that subject. He gives some really good chord voicings and classic rhythm patterns. I heard him a couple of years ago with Ronnie Earl. That was a master class and a half! There was enough there to keep me busy for a few years.

Couldn't say it any better, or are you just quoting me?

Elizabeth,
You said that Robben has said that "Supernatural" is his least selling CD. You were wondering why such a great CD(and it is)didn't sell better. Remember when it came out? It was right about the same time that a CD of the same name by another artist came out. I bought both. I gave one away, but I still have Robben's. I think that is partly what happened. Robben's CD got lost in the hoopla over the Santana "Supernatural". It's a shame. We know which one is the better of the two.
