Tip of the hat to Sonny Landreth for a Grammy nomination (blues category) for his CD "The Road We're On." Great stuff by a contemporary of RF. Fantastic slide playing and songwriting, as usual. Check out the cut 'Natural World' - it sends out chills ever time I listen to it. |

I heartily agree, telefunk. Sonny Landreth is first rate. South Of I-10 is a classic...I can never get Congo Square loud enough! Every now and then, I forget to turn the CD player down when I park my car; later, when I turn the key, HOLY @%$#^!*. (Funny, it didn't SEEM that loud this morning!)

South of I-10 is one of the best cds ever produced. And very few artists can evoke a region and culture through music as well as Landreth. Truly amazing stuff. |

Ed - well said! Could not agree more. I have had trouble clicking with Warren's style all along and have never been able to pin it down. He just doesn't swing. I have watched this show on Direct TV all month and I think you are right - when Warren plays the band kind of sounds flat, but when Trucks plays the sparks really fly. And as a slide junky there is no comparison between the two. I don't know how Warren can play slide on the same stage! |

Ed - you have captured my full attention. What's the name of the new Allman Bros DVD? _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. This brings up an interesting point. Other discussions have trickled in this direction, and I have seen some write that they cannot get into Derek Trucks because they feel a lack of "connection" with his audience (which I find to be ludicrous.) I think he is amazing.
I guess the caveat stands, "De gustibus non disputandem est." which is latin for, "One must not dispute taste." (I translate this for my seventh graders as, "You like rap, and I love the blues; it's all good."
I truly appreciate and value the diversity of tastes and opinions we share on this board. (And the chatting is too much fun!)

I seem to recall that thread, too. And it puzzled me then as it does now. So what if he does not mug and jump up and down? Miles spent a good part of his career with his back to the audience, right? Listen to Derek's track "Joyful Noise" and try not to connect! Where did I put my dancin' shoes... |

I like Warren Haynes work with both the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, but I think Derek is a truly amazing player. I have been watching the same concert on Dish Network. If you can get it or the DVD, look at the other players when Derek solos. Even Greg Allman gets lost in Derek's playing. Warren laughs out loud, because it is so good. Derek really brings some new ideas to the table while remaining faithful to the originals. I was going to tape the concert, but after seeing it, I want it on DVD so I don't lose a bit of the music. Now if we can just get another DVD from Robben...

I have discovered Derek Trucks last year and I have to say that I have been really impressed. I like his playing a lot, and he has a gorgeous tone as well. I used not to care about slide stuff, he really turned me onto that . |

The thing that really bothers me on that Allman CD is that Warren is mixed too hot and Derek is mixed way to low. It's ridiculous!!
I think the thing about Derek is what he will be sounding like 20 years from now? Can you imagine? What Derek plays is so soulful and well developed now but he runs out of things to say about halfway through the show IMHO. I have seen him a bunch of times with the Allmans and his own band. Every time I see him though he has added a lot of new stuff. With all the gigging he does, he will be a great one in the future no doubt! And his slide playing, with the exception of Sonny, is peerless.
To me Warren is a very accomplished blues player. However, the chemistry with Derek just doesn't seem to be there. I saw the Allmans with Herring and Trucks and it was like fireworks all night long. I have never gotten that same feeling with the Warren/ Trucks combination.
My 2 cents...... _________________ www.hendersounds.com
