I guess all guitarists have an archive of picks or the proverbial the cup-o-picks-from-the-past, I got a Min'd in there somewhere.
Personally, i use the heavy teardrops, Gibsons, but Gibson stopped making them! Fortunately I have a handful.
I also use a Fender heavy turned on its side (mandolin style, i guess).
Once, in Japan (circa 1980), I got a slightly larger teardrop -- had a Lee Ritenour signature on it.
Anyway, I have always liked to know (weird curiosity of mine) "what pick" is used by guitarist I admire.
So, what pick does Robben use? I refer to: most of the time, e.g., I don't see him "changing" picks live between songs so which type is "that" pick?

Last time I saw Robben play, his drummer handed me a couple of his picks. They were white medium pearloid Planet Waves picks with his siggy on one side and the Planet Waves logo on the other. |

In Robben's latest DVD on rhythm guitar, he states that you get a better sound with a lighter pick, but in the last DVD on soloing, he says that he likes a heavy pick! Maybe he has decided on the medium gauge as a compromise?

I have one ... Planet Waves on one side, the other has Robben's signature + TRUTH. It appears to be about a medium guage. |

Interesting subject... I don't think I've addressed it before, because I don't think anyone's brought it up before... which surprises me.
Give me a chance to put it together and I will post here the 'history' of his picks till now during my 10 years with him. _________________ B C-ing U!

At the Italian clinic I attended the other week, Robben said he used heavy picks. He was using a supplied Fender Blues deluxe reissue which sounded great, even Robben commented on how good it was. The clinic was absolutely excellent by the way. I can't wait for the Italian gigs next month. |

Fender used to make a huge triangular pick that resembled a dorito, I never used one, just a bit of pick nostalgia......god I gotta get a life.

I remember having one of those when I was a kid (in the 60s)... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Me, too, JZ. I think there's still one around the house somewhere.

I think they were reclassified as a dangerous weapon and thus made illegal. I used mine more like a ninja star than a guitar pick... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

It was great for ending bass solos, wasn't it?

I've heard Robben say he uses heavy picks for as long as I can remember (which is a long time).
Daved, you gave me a pick of Robben's at Catalina Bar & Grill last time I saw you there and it was a Planet Waves Heavy with Robben's sig on it. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

The first two picks Daved gave me of Robben's, circa 2005, were Planet Waves mediums...
My personal favorite currently is the Dunlop Ultex Jazz III. Small, sturdy, nice pointy end, and great feel and grip. I only wish there was a built in taser type anti-theft device to keep my son (25 going on 16) from stealing my stash (of picks, oh, and other hidden articles as well) . Seriously, a great pick worth trying... _________________ Soul on Eleven |
