A very rough, mid 80's studio working mix (recovered from recently discovered tapes) of a King/Kohls compostion performed by the legendary Northwest cowpunk band, The Silver Cockchaffers.... "If it sounds country, it's 'cause it is."
Our take on Marty Robbens...
So grab your hats and horses and let's make a dash for the border at the Rio Grande, y'all!
Daved plays electric guitar and sings harmony vox.
Go easy on me guys, this was many, many years ago.
(And, believe it or not actually, though the Cockchaffers have not performed live since the late 80's, they still have a large and loyal following in the Portland/Bend/Seattle regions). _________________ B C-ing U!

I really enjoyed it! Crispy guitars and nice singing. Loved the drumming, especially double snare rolls. _________________ www.customcabcom.com www.drika.biz
Tascam 4 track cassete recorder, lotsa ping-ponged tracks, drum machines, keyboards, guitars, layers of vocal tracks... it's all me, all original, all crude, but a lot of fun.
Hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording it. _________________ B C-ing U!

I'm surprised these tracks were made in the mid-90s. They are retro cool and not much different from some of the singer-songwriter music I'm listening to now [for example, Audrey Ryan's Dishes & Pills]. I love Beatles-influenced music, especially the slightly zany sound (studio effects) of Sgt. Pepper. Your song, "An Apology," is a dead ringer for a Beatles composition. It's a great song.
I mentioned Audrey Ryan because her music is layered much like what I heard listening to Daved's Tascam 4 track cassette recordings, There are lots of solo musicians, like Audrey, touring around coffee houses and college campus making cool music, on the fly, using a loop station to get the same layered effect. I would think that Blues is a natural genre for this kind of thing, but surprisingly, I can't think of one touring Blues artist playing live Blues with loop effects. I'm thinking of Blues-style music like R.L. Burnside or Otis Taylor. I've seen Otis perform with a band, but I don't remember if he loops. _________________ Travelling by train of thought
With nods towards Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson, and once again in the cowpunk tradition, this is a song of despair and love gone sour, as seen thru the bottom of a shotglass.
An upright acoustic piano was available where this song was recorded in the Fresh Tracks main studio A, in Portland, OR, and I took advantage of it to contribute my 'Floyd Cramer' style tinkling of the ivories. I also added background harmony vocals. _________________ B C-ing U!

RD,
As you no doubt know by now, I was not at Robben's Jazz Alley gigs, but I hope you had yourself a great time.
I always loved doing Robben's shows there but, sadly on my part, Robben apparently no longer feels the need or desire for my services, I know not why. So, tho not MY choice, I doubt highly if you all will be seeing me working with him much anymore. I will, however, always retain very fond memories of my decade with him and a high level of respect for his talent and the many years of friendship that he gave me.
As for the Silver Cockchaffers...
Thanx for the compliments.
The Cockchaffers existed for an all too brief period of time in the mid 80's when cow-punk, the primary forerunner to the Alternative-Country genre, was the flash-in-the-pan, but very hot, genre that launched and/or fired up many succesful music careers...
...Beat Farmers, Blasters, Bottle Rockets, Cowslingers, Cracker, Dash Rip Rock, Drive-By Truckers, Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Everclear, Georgia Sattelites, Green On Red, Gun Club, Johnny Hickman, Jason & The Scorchers, Long Ryders, Los Lobos, Lone Justice, Maria McKee, Meat Puppets, Mojo Nixon, Rank & File, Reverand Horton Heat, Rubber Rodeo, Social Distortion, The Unforgiven, Vandals, Dwight Yoakam, Th' Legendary Shack*Shakers (to name but a very few), all blossomed from that period...
...and we were/are proud to have been a participating element in the '80s Northwest heritage and history of the movement.
As I've mentioned before, there has been a recent (...and, surprising to us!) rediscovery and resurgence of young fans who literally throw "Cockchaffer parties" in and around Portland/Seattle.
Key member/founders of the group, brothers Eugene & Glynn Bewley and producer/performer Elmo Dowd Jr. (me... lol), have been restoring and digitizing what remains of old studio and performance tapes and are beginning to make them available once again thru the Silver Cockchaffer MySpace page. We have even had requests for "reunion concerts", tho getting original members together in one spot long enough to do so would be an overwhelmingly daunting task... but, who knows?
If you do find this music to your liking, return to their MySpace page every so often to watch for "new" tunes as they become available.

We do appreciate the support... thanx! _________________ B C-ing U!
