Hi all,

It must be because I'm from Europe, but I just can't figure out the words Robben is singing in Earthquake.

The line he sings after angry eyes sounds like "books and paintings" to me, but I'm pretty shure it must be something else ..... Embarassed

Any suggestions anyone ?

hooks and baiting .... mmm makes sense in the context of the rest.

Personally (in my humble opinion) I think the whole cd is great, but if I have to pick a favourite track... this would be the one Razz .

A great song doesn't need much lyrics.

Yes I wonder if it's about a real person too.

No quiche... this one is about cake. Razz

What are the words after "You're the taker of the cake, the one who fools (? ? ?) ... my own private LA earthquake" Question

"...who fools dost make..."

I believe middle and early modern english form, also used in Shakespeare's writings (see that lit class a long time ago maybe paid off ; ) ).

"Dost is the present singular second person tense of "do".

In other words, it was used when speaking to a single person directly about something that is current or ongoing." = definition I found

I'm curious what you like about this song? It would be cool to hear everyone's opinions.

I like the simplicity and economy of the lyrics, but I was immediately drawn to the progression of notes, melody, behind "waiting for someone that I've never been." It's like a melody you find yourself mindlessly humming. Like the musical ideas I (or you) get while driving or walking, especially walking.

I wonder, did the song evolve around the opening lines? What came next? I love the big instrumental midsection. It can be performed to whatever length of time he has to fill. This is a song that can be used over and over and will never get old sounding because it gets re-invented every night. Robben has lots of songs that do that and that's what keeps me interested in his music and concerts.

The first is definitely "hooks and baiting". The second is "who fools doth make". I keep thinking I have heard that quoted somewhere else, but I can't find it right now. I love this song, too. There are places that remind me of Steely Dan.

First time I heard Robben play this song, I mentioned to him that I could easily see this being a Tom Waits tune. He smiled and said he could see that too.

After hearing Robben's smooth vocals it's hard to imagine Tom's gravelly vocals, but it does have the kind of imagery that Tom uses a lot.
