Thanks for link, AlChuck. The music was different than I expected !? I thought Larry described it as the Beatles meets Coltrane. The samples sounded more psychedelic pop-rock.

Totally kickass! I only got to catch the 10:00 show because my grandma cam over for dinner. Chris was burnin' man like usual! Dave Kurt Matthews was not only doin' work on the Hammond but also on the Steinway! Steve Evans on bass and the young Tyler Eng on drums lay it down like it aint nobodies business! pretty good turnout for a weeknight too!

Caught the "Loud and Rich Show" last night at the beautiful Creighton Theater, in Conroe TX. Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson. Wainwright was great - very funny, some old and new tunes and Thompson sat in on 2 numbers. Thompson, if you are not familar with him you need to be. His career goes back the 60s, with Fairport Convention and Richard and Linda Thompson. Folk rock at its finest. He has been splitting time with solo tours and with a full band - he was solo last night. This is the second time I have seen him and he is just freakin' amazing, as a songwriter, singer and guitarist. His song, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is one of the greatest love songs ever written. One of the reasons I dig him is because he is so very non-blues oriented (think Celtic instead as an inspiration). It is just great to get out of my traditional blues/jazz context and give the ears a change. A lot of folks compare him to Mark Knopfler (and vice versa) which is fair, but it is only the tip of the iceberg. Just amazing acoustic guitar work. Seeing him play reminds me why I don't play acoustic!

Saw Pat Martino in San Francisco, part of the SF Jazz Festival Fall season. The show's theme was "Hammond B-3 Summit" - Pat's group was an organ "trio" format (actually a quartet with Eric Alexander on sax) with the great Tony Monaco on B-3, and the opening act was the Larry Goldings Trio.

Running a little late on this report: About two weeks ago at the "Zoey's at the Lodge" venue, the old Elks Lodge in Ventura, CA, for a rare live appearance by Karla Bonoff (backed up by longtime friend, colleague, producer etc. Kenny Edwards). It was a magical evening. It may not be a fair assessment, but Bonoff has always seemed a bit of a recluse, and not 100% comfortable with live performing. When she introduced "All My Life" by talking about how the producer of the movie she'd written it for cut it from the soundtrack before release; how the label she recorded it for went bust before releasing it; how Linda Ronstadt phoned her one day and asked if she had anything Ronstadt could record as a duet; and how she was in her pajamas at home watching it on TV when Ronstadt and Aaron Neville accepted a Grammy for their duet version, she seemed sort of regretful about the whole thing, even before quipping, "I'm told it gets played a lot at weddings ... I wouldn't know ... I never go to any ..." We left the show thinking, "She outta' get out more!"

Kenny started the evening with a short solo set. A lot of tunes he's been polishing over the past few years are on his new CD "Resurrection Road," well worth picking up.

I saw Trombone Shorty on Saturday. It was 28 degrees (yes, in Tampa!), but the 2 1/2-hour show was worth every shiver. I felt bad for the guitar and bass players (their fingers must've of been numb ... the lucky horn players wore gloves.)

Monday I saw singer-songwriter Kim Richey at Jaeb Theatre. It was my first time seeing her live, although I've been a fan of her music for a few years. Her voice and her songwriting are my idea of perfect. She played an acoustic guitar and was accompanied by guitarist Dean Tidey (from the rock band, Feeder). She sounded fantastic, even better than her studio albums, which I love. Kim Richey is also a great storyteller. I could sense creativity beaming from her beautiful soul. Before she played one of the last songs of the night, she told a great story of walking all over London with a musician-friend one night during a snow flurry. There were big, fluffy flakes falling and it was after midnight -- the streets were silent. She wrote about it in a song. I could see everything she was describing... it was magical.

The James Montgomery Band. A 3-hour huge energy show. Great band, and James is a great showman.

Next up- Dave Mason. One of my all-time favorites, yet this will be the first time seeing him live...

Saw HoBoLeMa (Allan Holdsworth, guitar; Terry Bozzio, drums; Tony Levin, electric upright bass and Chapman Stick; and Pat Mastelotto, drums) last Wednesday at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA. Pure improv, no tunes or pre-arranged structures or anything. I loved it, but lots of people hate this kind of thing and there was lots of griping about it online here and there.

Keep an ear out at a venue near you for THE BOOGIE BOYS. Three guys from Krakow, Poland, now touring the U.S. They plan two pianos and drums, and switch places mid-tune. An absolute riot, and music that gets you up dancing.

Caught 'em a while back at the Torch Club in Sacramento, and glad I did.
