I saw Robben and Michael at the Blue Note in Tokyo the other day. I enjoyed the live show a lot more than the CD. Robben got the best tone I have heard from him in a long time playing a '63 Epiphone with mini humbuckers (it was heavier than I expected though). And Michael sounded great, as usual, with his '63 Strat through a couple of Hot Rod Fender amps.

Did they play songs from the new CD, mostly? I like the Renegade Creation cd a lot -- it's different enough from their other recent releases but stays true to their own musical storyline. Did they play any covers, such Hendrix or Beatles? What new songs do Japanese fans like best? Were there songs from the concert that stood out -- amazing jams or solos you remembered as being outstanding?

With the exception of a blues tune for an encore, it was pretty much stuff from the CD. No covers that I recall. It's hard to tell if the Japanese fans had any particular preferences, but both Robben and Michael have their fans here. As far as jams and solos go, Michael was Michael, what more can you say! But I have to say that Robben played and sounded better than I have heard him in quite a while. That Epi really seemed to suit him (although he was having a bit of trouble keeping it in tune). I think giving up the RF Band and concentrating on working with other artists is the best thing he could have done. He really seems to be expanding as an artist and his playing is becoming fresh again. I hope he keeps it up.

Ed, I think you should probably send that '63 Strat to me. You can keep the '63 wife though. ;-)
