I finally got to see Rodrigo y Gabriela Sunday night when they played a club in Ybor City. It was an amazing show. The music was amazing, but even more interesting was the way they used cameras during the performance to capture and broadcast onto a curtain behind them onstage. They had wireless cameras taped to the headstocks of their guitars, so you had a birds eye view down the strings and you could see what their hands were doing. It was a high energy show with a lot audience participation. Each section of the room was given rhythms to clap and the music was living and breathing. There were also tiny cameras attached to mic stands on stage to capture video. The sound man controled the video that was shown on the rear cutain from the soundboard in the back of the room.
There was an interesting warm-up band, The Alex Skolnick Trio. He is a great guitar player and I enjoyed his jazzy arrangements of heavy metal songs I probably wouldn't have enjoyed hearing at all. Skolnick also previewed a song or two from his next release, Veritas (Truth). About 3/4 of the way through the headline show, Skolnick joined Rodrigo and Gabriela for a few songs. I loved that part of the show -- two acoustics and Skolnick's big jazz guitar.
Rodrigo y Gabriela are heading to Europe next. _________________ Travelling by train of thought

Alex has been a good friend for many years, ever since the mid 90's when I teched for him over the last year of his first go around with Testament and for the Japanese leg of his brief stint with Savatage. Shortly thereafter he and I rented a house near downtown Bezerkly which we shared for almost 3 years till he moved to New York to go to Jazz college and I moved to southern Cal to start working with Robben.
He left Testament solely because he wanted to expand his musical horizons, knowledge, and abilities, and the guys in Testament steadfastly refused to let him, constantly arguing with him that there was no room in metal music for any other styles and/or influences. During our Berkley days he started experimenting with many different styles, especially Jazz for which he found a very strong interest.
One of his first solo bands was a jazz group he put together in Berkley called the Skol-Patrol and started playing locally around the bay area. He put out a brilliant independant release titled simply, "The Skol-Patrol" which featured his jazz reworkings of several 'cop show' themes and styles... "Theme For An Imaginary Cop Show", "Fox Force-5", "Probation","Theme From The Rookies", and "Theme From Starsky And Hutch".
Though known primarily as a metal-god, he is an incredibly talented, down-to-earth, warm and gentle human with a genuine love and talent for all styles of music. I'm very glad he came into, and remains, in my close circle of friends. _________________ B C-ing U!

Yes, I'm going to Wanee this year. And to the Tampa Bay Bluesfest the weekend before. I guess I never outgrew spring break!
Interesting story about Alex Skolnick. I think his tour with Rodigo y Gabriela went well. It was a lot of fun hearing all of them play together. _________________ Travelling by train of thought

The crowd was smaller than ever, but it was good time! I saw 15 bands and there was only one I didn't like. My favorite sets were Joe Louis Walker with Murali Coryell on second guitar, Jimmie Vaughan, John Nemeth, and JJ Grey & Mofro. I bought a few CDs, including Murali Coryell's "Sugar Lips" -- sweet, soulful blues featuring three great guitarists (Murali, his Dad, Larry, and Joe Louis Walker). It's a great album! Murali has a wonderful voice, he's a great guitarist and the songs he penned for this debut release are heartfelt.
I'm looking forward to Wanee. There will be way too much music; there's no way to see even half of what will be offered. But I hope to see some bands I've never seen live, and I'm looking forward to the breakfast blues sets with Bobby Lee Rodgers _________________ Travelling by train of thought

I saw the Battle Studies Tour last night and I loved it! I think John Mayer loves heartbreak and what it does for his music. He's touring with a great band, including two horn players and a two guitar players (McIntosh and Ryan Harris). Harris sings backup and also lead vocals on one or two songs/song intros. They played a very long Voodoo Child which the crowd loved. He also played a lot of music from his other albums -- acoustic music too. He made up some very funny song lyrics last night -- what's there not to like about John Mayer? _________________ Travelling by train of thought

Ruthie Foster and her band performed last weekend at a fundraiser for the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland (half way between Tampa and Orlando). It was a lot of fun. Ruthie was great!
I'm also psyched about an upcoming festival: Riverhawk. Alison Brown will play with John R. Burr and Joe Craven (I think). Jimmy Lafave, John Jorgenson and the Lee Boys are also on the line-up. It's a camping festival, not as big as the one at Suwannee Music Park.
And, I'll be seeing Ray Davies with the Dessoff Chamber Choir at the Beacon Theatre. It's been a long time since I've seen him with the Kinks in Boston. Should be a lot of fun. I'm also going to watch the giant helium balloons get inflated the night before the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I've been to balloon festivals, but I've never been to Inflation Eve! _________________ Travelling by train of thought
