|

Hi Dave D!
Question for you and I apologize if this has been asked before but when Robben goes into a overdrive tone, does he A) just use the amp distortion B) uses a pedal for overdrive into channel A of the Dumble (or Bludo) or C) uses a combination of the pedal for overdrive into the B channel with slight distortion from the amp or ? I'm trying to figure out how much of the amp distortion he uses verses how much pedal?
Thanks very much for your help on this!

I think the above (from our beloved captain) is true 99% of the time, but it seems that sometimes he uses the Zendrive as a boost to the drive channel for his Dumble, thats' the case I think in the Leverkusen Jazztage concert you can see on Youtube.
Lately with Renegade Creation his pedalboard included the Zen, along with the Dumble (which is not proof that he uses it, all right, but I doubt it would be on the board at all if unused). |

Not sure why he would need anything with the tan Dumble? :-)
But PierreL could be right. _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Thank you!

Not sure on this - could change from guitar to guitar. I do know that the marked settings on his Tan Dumble are deep (switch on the front) down/off.
Here's a zoom in of the last show I spotted the Tan ONE.

I don't have a clue either David Maybe to get more feedback. |

it seems, from what i can study, that sometimes he's using a fender amp with a zend... thus no boost... my point is (other than the Dumble related [boost switch] aspect you actually asked about)... e.g., take a tele bridge and go into a Fender and try to get to the sound that is.. shall i say: "not so" sharply trebly? or just sharp/edgy enough.
so, not only with a fender is there no such switch to kick in... even on the Dumble... as much as he mixes using different pups... that'd be a lot of kicking! yes? |

i could see that. i set up, if i'm using it, the drive channel of one of my amps and use its switch specifically for that over-the-top purpose. |

The tan Dumble (#102) has a OD channel (sort of), PAB (pre amp boost = EQ Bypass) for both channels AND the deep switch is actually a mid boost. No idea how often he uses it though. |

Hey just saw that on TGP after the Renegade Creation shows (in Oakland) :
Quote: | Robben seemed to enjoy playing with the pedals, used them more than I recall seeing him use pedals (other than wah and volume) in the past.. Slap delay on and off, zen used as a "zen->clean" a couple of times, but more often as a boost to the OD channel a few times when he wanted to take things a bit over the top. |
So it seems correct. |

Thanks for all the good information guys. I've been working to see if I could match Robben's tone. I did this a couple years back with a clip of Larry Carlton -- here's that clip: http://www.radicaltone.com/MLGdemos/MLvrsLC.mp3
the clip goes back and forth between Larry's lines and mine. We did a contest and only one person got close to figuring out which lines were Larry and which were me.
I tried for years to do the same thing with Robben's tone but I didn't have the right guitar or an amp that sounded close enough to a real Dumble. So I've remedied those two things and came up with this clip: http://www.radicaltone.com/MLGdemos/RFvrsMichael.mp3 -- this cuts back and forth between Robben's lines and mine. See if you can tell who is who. This was just amp and guitar, no pedals. 212 ported back cab with G1265's.
