Thanks for the great thread on Melodic minor and it's uses! I'm trying to get my head around the altered scale and Robben's use of it at the V7 to I. Does anyone have any favorite altered licks or patterns they use with this chord change?

What would be the best example/your favorite melodic minor or altered lick by Robben and in what song?

I love "misdirected Blues".

One of my favorites has always been the phrase he plays in "Help the Poor" from Talk To Your Daughter, in the second chorus of his first solo, at about 2:53... a beautiful little flurry of a phrase...

Reposting since only one reply. Looking for some good licks from the altered scale especially from the I7 to the IV. Any favs?

May I suggest two books that have been an invaluable help for me in this regard:

Jazz Licks by David Peterson (Publisher Carl Fischer)
Bebop Licks For Guitar by Les Wise (Publisher Hal Leonard)

A lot of hard work is required, but you probably guessed that ;-) but it really is worth it.

I'd also suggest checking out other players in the jazz idiom. Some of those lines may require some modification to work in a more bluesy context, but you'd be surprised -- sometimes all it takes is to play them with the right attitude.
