It's sure been a while since I've posted anything here. We went down to Mill Valley last Saturday for the show at the 142 Throckmorton, a return performance from about a year ago, and even better than last year's.
Anne opened the show with pianist and her musical director and collaborator John Boswell. Wonderful. Anne has a way of digging up great stuff that Kurt Weill did with people other than Bertolt Brecht. Last year it was a a tune he wrote with Ira Gershwin. This year it was a number he wrote with Maxwell Anderson. There was only one problem with Anne's performance: Not enought time. (Maybe next year they should do two nights, one for Anne, one for Robben?) By the way, Robben came out and did a really nice introduction for Anne.
Then it was the Robben Ford/Jonathan McEuen show. Where Robben still carries Mike Bloomfield's influence in his playing, with Jon you sure know that he grew up in a family of banjo pickers. His fingers just fly, and at times it made for a really nice contrast to Robben's more lyric lines. A nice set of new stuff, old stuff, and in between, including a song written (and originally performed) by Jon's Ventura friend Suzanne Paris, "World of Hunger," that doesn't get enough play. To hear Robben doing a tune that's one of our favorites was absolutely great.
So why wasn't the 142 Throckmorton filled to the brim with a long line outside? The venue is wonderful, and the audience very enthusiastic. When Anne talked about how much she and Robben love the venue, I don't believe she was kidding. If they do this again next year, don't miss it.
By the way, for dinner beforehand we went to "Vasco," just a few doors down to the east from the 142 Throckmorton. We highly recommend it.
