It seems a good, thorough book to me. I've just got to page 12, Transposing the Scale to Other Keys, which is a lot of work for one page, taking all five positions through the chord sequence.

I've used the melodic minor scale often in the past, a semi tone up from a dominant 7 chord, and as a way to move from chord I to chord IV in a blues, but I thought it was time to give it an in-depth study.

I can't really see the sequence in Example 8. Every time I think I have it, he trips me up. See the f natural in bar 3, for instance.

So, anyone else working with this book?

In Example 8, what mode of the MM over what chord is he demonstrating?

He is demonstrating an E melodic minor over an A7#11 - which is not the problem. He is giving an example of a repeating sequence, but compared to the other three sequences he shows, this one is not regular. I guess it is not an issue, after all why should a sequence be regular?

I'm sure you'll enjoy the book. Lots of Robben-style language in there.

Rob,

Got it this morning. Just about the only thing I can say (which will be no surprise to you) is you're right -- Example 8 is not as rigidly sequential as the other 3 examples. Also, odd that it alone of the 4 examples also contains a bunch of notes outside the parent scale.

I wonder if there's a way to contact Mock on this -- seems like what he's doing here would be worth making more clear.

Hi Tim. I just noticed at the back of the book he says something along the lines of "you may have noticed I added in a few chromatic notes here and there throughout the book" (I am not at home now, so can't quote verbatim) -so why didn't he tell us that on page one?! I've been scratching my head trying to work out how is practice meets his theory.

Otherwise, it seems a good book...
