Hey Aeolian, I know you don't like these guys, but I thought they were a lot of fun to watch. One of my students brought me their CD yesterday, I think they rock, especially for 21 year olds! It's good time, crank up the CD in the car, rock out stuff. I have had several people ask me who it is...I like it (but then what do I know?)
Who is going to Yoshi's? Which nights? Which shows? I say we try to sit together...and I ain't got nobody to go with on Sunday night.
If I lived, say, 2800 miles west of here, you would have someone to go with on Sunday night. When I see how many shows you guys get to see out there, the green eyed monster comes to life inside me.............FL

Elizabeth,
It's not that I don't like the Lonelies, it's just that I can go to any jam night around the bay area and someone will be playing like this. And I was disappointed to have to sit through an hour of it when I was there to hear Robben. Ahh youth, to be young again and have the confidence (or is it cluelessness or arrogance) to carry on like that on stage when you know Robben Ford is coming up right behind you.
There's another possible thread for the playing members of this forum. Could you give your best, balls out, performance, opening for Robben? Or would you be sweating bullets? I was telling Elizabeth how at the last clinic when someone said that I could play Giant Steps and Robben turned to me and said "really? let's hear it", how my fingers turned to stone.
Anyhow, it would be great to meet some of the other bay area folks in person at one of these shows. I looked on the Yoshi's site and they don't show a Sunday afternoon matinee like usual. I was planing on one mid-week show, one weekend, and the Sunday afternoon. Then maybe Tuesday in Petaluma. You have to get to Yoshi's two hours ahead to save a seat, and then do something until the show starts. Best seats, second row of tables center to just right of center. In the first row you can't hear the mains. The drummers all crowd around the first and second rows around 4:00 to the right so they can see the drummers left hand. The guitarists who plant themselves right in front of Robben miss out cause they get the Dumble full on, (read Kirk's or Daved's comments about sitting right in front of it) and Robben usually turns to his left to look at the rest of the band, especially while soloing.
See ya there! _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Jeeez Aeolian, I cannot tell you how intimately I relate to your post; my voice disappears, my mouth turns to mush, and everything around me spins out of control, each object spinning at different speeds, in different directions. (Makes me uncomfortable even to think about it!)
But I swear I'm gonna get up and do it again, even if it kills me; because if it doesn't, it will make me stronger, right?

Elisabeth, I'll have to agree with you on the boys there CD grows on you and everyone I have played it for thinks its great. Haven't seen them live but looking forward to. I think its great showing enthusiasm while performing it may have not been a good fit opening for robben that would be a tough crowd. You know how musicians are. It wouldn't be the fact that Robben might be watching from the wings but all the critics in the house. Please no one take offense here I'm a critical listener but having no talent myself I may not be as hard on someone as the aficianados here.

Route66, from my second row seat, I could see Robben standing in the wings, watching them before his set. He looked like he was enjoying it. I give them points for having the mettle to get up there before an icon the likes of Robben Ford. The crowd was sparse at that point, and it was clear that most of those folks had come to see Blues Traveler...go figure. By the time BT came on, the place was packed (they seemed to come out of nowhere) and the audience went wild. I think they call that, "mass appeal."

I like Los Lonely Boys. I haven't seen them live yet, but I enjoy the CD. I know what Aeolian means about playing in front of Robben. I was at a clinic with he and Ronnie Earl. Ronnie said he wanted to hear each of play for him and I wanted to crawl under the seat. I don't know why-I just did. I have seen Blues Traveler live, and I got tired of them before their set was over. I like some of their stuff, and we cover some of it, but a little goes a long way. I'd skip all of them to hear Robben. He always brings something new to the table.
I agree with Fingerlakes, too. I am very envious of all the good shows you guys get to see. I'd do most anything to see Robben again.
