Anyone know? There's a 335 on the cover, but the tone sure sounds like a Strat sometimes. I know that the first Yellowjackets album was recorded with a Strat and that has the same sound.
Always curious about the origin of the tones.[/i] |

I think"The Yellowjackets" album is mostly 335. "Matinee Idol" and "It's Almost Gone" are the only Strat tunes to my ear. "The Inside Story" sounds like all humbucker guitar, to me. Probably a 335. |

Interesting. I had read (I think in an interview in an 88 GP) that the YJ album was recorded with a Strat. Maybe I can find that issue and check again. Anyone else have any insight? |

I'm fairly certain he was using a 335 for the album. When I saw a show from that tour-he was playing a 335 the entire evening. (unfortunately, this is the only time I've heard him live-awesome!) It's obviously posssible he used a Strat for a cut or two, but I hear humbuckers on the album myself. |

I remember to have seen a clip where Robben played with a strat with one humbucker in bridge position.
Edit :
I'm a luky man, I refound it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qM-gSeBjKk8
He's with David Samborn at Mantreux in 1981. Let's hear the Robben's tone, it's pretty close to 335 tone ... that's amazing !
We can in some way recognise a part of the "Talk to Your Daughter" album tone on this one with Miles Davis : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P67DMvNqINY
It's seem that he used Hot rail pups on his guitar for this clip, isn't it ?
Whatever the guitar, his tone is pretty much in his hands. _________________ Stay in the wind and on the wave summit.

I vote 335. I saw him in 1979 in Boulder playing those tunes. 335 through a 1x12 Boogie. He also used a Guild Starfire on "For The One I love". Yamaha SS amps like he used later came out in 1978 - I bought one when they first came out. But in '79 he was using the Boogie. Here from the same Montreux show in '81 (same duds too) he's using the 335 through the Yamaha.

I DO believe some of those rhythm tracks on Inside Story were Strat. Also on YJ 1 & 2. Leads? 335.
