That's true Paul. The only exception that comes to mind is that one of Pete Townsend's guitars is a Clapton Strat (although modified with a piezo bridge). Maybe it's because musicians have their own idea of the perfect instrument for their sound and it's usually not somebody else's idea?

I am a musician - not anywhere near Robben's class - but a musician nonetheless. I buy guitars to play, not to hang on the wall and look at. Soooo, I wouldn't pay any more for number one than I would for a new one. I'll bet number 1 would take some work to get back in playing shape (but maybe not), and besides all that, the mojo is in the man- not the guitar.
Robben would differ with me (and has), but the great sound he gets is because of his great hands and wonderful musical background. |

Still a bit sad, as those models are unique in both looks and tone. |
Though I am more of a stratplayer, I have 2 wonderful Esprits, one Standard and one Ultra. At least in Europe these guitars are relatively unknown. It probably never happened to me on a gig that someone came afterwards and said: yeah you are playing a Robben Ford guitar. Most of the time people ask what kind of guitar this is, looks like a Gibson with Fender on the headstock.
I bought this guitars years ago because I always loved Robbens sound at the time he played his Ultra. But I found them very versatile too, the Standard can be a real rocker but also a great Jazz guitar (check out my latest Jazz record with singer and husband Renate Reich: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/renatereichfivetett )
I used the Esprit Standard for the whole album, although I also have a wonderful old Gibson ES 175.
I personally dont care if a guitar is an artist model or not, as long as it serves my purpose an my kind of playing.
merry X-mas to all the musiclovers on the board. _________________ "The most important thing is that you make sure you follow the music, which is a musician’s way of saying follow your heart. (Robben Ford) |

I just realized, there is not much guitar to listen on the cd baby parts.
There is more solo stuff to listen on my page: http://www.palmenreich.at/releases.htm
An Esprit Standard with a (at that time) Lindy Fralin in the neck position and a silverface Fender Vibrolux. Right now I have some Gibson Tim Shaw pickups in this guitar. _________________ "The most important thing is that you make sure you follow the music, which is a musician’s way of saying follow your heart.
