The first time I saw Robben was at the Singapore Hard Rock (13 years ago?)
I used to go all the time for business and one Friday night saw the ad for him
after it seemed like all the taxi's had been booked. Helpful old gent offers to tricycle me (at least 100 pounds his senior, and 50 years his junior) to the gig. $40 Sing seems like a good offer; he runs out of breath about a block from my hotel, and asks if I want a woman instead. "Not right now thanks, just the Hard Rock."
Two more blocks, he changes the offer to wanting a man instead, "NO THANKS, just the Hard Rock". He continues to pant and curse me for about 40 minutes. Finally at the show, cold pint in hand, our hero is playing his arse off. Not even the 3 huge young Austrailians behind me yelling "heavy metal" could ruin it for me.
But everytime I see a trishaw I think of RF.

Too Cool. I was at the Singapore Hard Rock last fall. I looked around but didn't see any Robben stuff, should have looked harder. Funny, as you go up the road from the harbor, the big red light building all the sailors go to is a block and a half before the HR. I can just see the guy stopping early, dropping you off and collecting his "commission".

Not even sure why, just being stubborn I guess. Other then the good Cuban cigars and Tiger stout, I was remarkably well behaved in Singapore. I actually made a set list of that show (something I do to divert attention to the fact that I'm alone) but it's long since gone.
I seem to remember writing "must kill huge drink guys for yelling
"Evee Metul" repeatedly". I should check my passport for the date, and see who was playing with Robben then.

... but seriously, must be something about my fellow 'stralians and RF. Last time he toured here I remember a bunch of guys behind me yelling for Hendrix stuff ("play some #$!&ing Jimi"). The though process behind this request goes something like this:

- Robben is touring as a renowned blues player
- beer
- they don't know who he is but they know Hendrix played a lot of blues
- beer
- they don't know any other blues players
- beer
- therefore Robben should play some Hendrix stuff

Actually, the last time Clapton toured here the same thing happened. Go figure.

hey Strat cat may be these guys are down under & beer.
Or they are like Frank Gambale, they can go and live in US but they still
don't have any green cards.
Or may be they are addicted to AC DC and are makin' a true realfan Joke.

I like the beer part!

If you listen to a lot of Robben...we all do right!!....Robben quotes Jimi every now and then....

Purple Haze in "I'm Your Man" on Live in SF ...comes to mind!

Did I say I like the beer part?

I just HAVE to say this...at the August clinic, Robben was talking about the notes of the scale and broke into this little ditty:

Do, for beer, to buy some beer
Re, the man who buys your beer
Mi, some beer, I need some beer
Fa, I'll go so far for beer...

I guess the beer thing for you guys is like the shoe thing for me. Ahhhh, we are, indeed, hard-wired so differently, "...and that's how I like it!"

Yep, the 2 important questions when you arrive at a gig...

Where's the beer .......and when do we get paid?
