I will be putting Robben, Jimmy, and Vinnie into the studio this weekend to record the second Jing Chi studio album.

Jimmy tells me he is, at this point anyway, calling it Jing Chi 3D ("...it's the 3rd album, there are 3 band members, and it will be recorded in studio D *laughs*!").

Jimmy says they hope to do some more Jing Chi touring later in the year.

That's a nice surprise. I was hoping for another one at some point. This is cool as they all seem to be into this project as opposed to making this more of a one-off affair. It was one of those things I thought they'd get around to but not for a while. What great discs these are! A much wider tour would be most appreciated. Thanks for the great news!

OK Jing Chia pets- get out the slings and arrows. Is there anyone else besides me out there that is less than excited about JC 3? I have posted my negative reaction to the first CD, and I got the Live CD over the holiday break. I listened to it pretty much non stop last week on a drive from College Station TX to New Orleans and back and still can't get too excited about this stuff. Even live the songwriting is a downer and not much more than an excuse to wank over trite fusion progressions. MD Blues is pretty cool, but that is about the highlight for me. Oh well. Opinions are like...you know.

And another thing - I really miss bass players using 4 string basses! Roscoe on a old Fender speaks to me more than Jimmy and his 6 strings.

But still 5 is one less than 6... So I guess my point is it ain't the equipment it is what you do with it! (or as the song goes, "it ain't the meat its the motion" - any Southside Johnny fans out there?)

Didn't Roscoe tour with the Dixie Chicks? As did David Grissom, who is another great player that deserves greater notice and appreciation.

My favorite bassist (and I think Robben has said his as well) is Jimmy Earl. Jimmy definately uses only 4 strings on his 70's Fender Jazz bass. Nevertheless, the Jing Chi project is interesting to me, if only because it allows Robben to stretch out and play some outside s**t, along with Jimmy Haslip and Vinnie Colaiuta (who is, bar none, my favorite drummer). Yes, Roscoe was using the 5 string last year. We also had a 4 string Precision Bass out there as a backup, but he rarely used it.

And yep, Roscoe was out with the Chicks all last year ( I remember seeing them on one of those late night shows like SNL and there was Roscoe in the backline, with a big grin and playfully trying to position himself in line with the camera lens whenever it aimed his way).

I wholly agree. Having worked with players like Stu Hamm for several years, I can totally appreciate the expertise in which styles like "bicky-boom" are executed, but it's not really one of my favorites musically speaking. For my own listening enjoyment I, myself, prefer a more melodic style such as McCartney's or Bruce's or Chandler's and such, rather than the modern, gymnastic, rhythmic oriented styles so often favored these days. I guess I'm just stuck in "old school". But hey, that's just me and I like it that way!
