Thanks for the rare insight, Big Al. Nice to hear this history from someone local.
I've been to Ukiah a few times, most recently last summer to see the Ford Brothers band at the park. A woman in the crowd told me they were like the Beatles when she was in high school.
Wow! Robbed in a marching band! |

For me, growing up in the same neighborhood, it was the Ford bros practising outside on their patio in Ukiah, Calif. We heard amplified music, walked over to their street and leaned against the fence listening. That was maybe the late 1960s...
Robben was actively playing all the time, including our high school band. He played saxaphone, alto I believe. I marched in the marching band with him! We did some parades, mostly playing at the school's football games and pep rallies. Also the concert band played a few performances a year. And Robben was a musical director of the Junior/Senior talent show (1970 I think), an incredible show, and a great variety of talent for our small berg.
But of course he was playing guitar, and he and his brothers played the blues at various places around the area, before he graduated and left on his incredible musical journey.

For quite a few years I lived in a small town in Sonoma County in Northern California. It seemed that Robben would be playing up in the North Bay fairly often, maybe he was traveling up and down the Coast visiting family.
The first time I saw him live was in the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma. I will never forget that night. Best guitar tone I've ever heard. And, of course, he was just on fire. Caught him every chance I could after that.

I think the L.A Express was the first I heard from Robben, around '76 or so.
It wasn't until years later that I became a 'Ford-o-Phile."
