Marin, I've read that page several times, and i'm confused... at first read, i thought it was an insult... but now i'm not sure. Could Larry have meant "raunchy" in a "good" way ??? Some writers screw up the real meanings of things.... |

I think he mean't something like "wild" or "hot".
He carries on saying how they became very close, how he enjoyed Robbens playing and how, as a consenquence, his interest in blues deepened.
I would say that he meant it in a positive way, just his choice of words was unfortunate.

Apart some problems with my teeth , everything works fine sooo faaaar.
Still Cold, no Bandmates, just some wild jams mostly with people trying to do jazz tunes over & over, which i don't play, so i try to make them play blues, but these are that kind of jazz musicians who DON' T play any blues.

Larry clearly meant "raunchy" as a compliment of the highest order. After all, he dedicated his very first solo record to Robben, along with John Coltrane. Larry means that Robben doesn't hold back, and really gets down and dirty with the blues, whereas Larry at times used to sound a little too sweet, i.e., saccharine. However, in recent years, Larry has really managed to go for it and is playing more guitar than anybody else out there, in my humble opinion. Larry doesn't sing much anymore (since the incident in which he was shot in the neck by some intruders in his home studio). Consequently, he let's his guitar do the speaking for him. And speak it does -- just listen to the Steve Lukather/Larry Carlton collaboration on Steve Vai's record label. I was fortunate enough to see some of those shows on tour. Lukather (who doesn't strike me as a particularly humble kind of guy), calls Larry his "sensei" -- master. Larry truly is a master. And to set the record straight, Larry was on the national scene long before Robben made a dent with Witherspoon, George Harrison, or Joni Mitchell. Larry is a true "renegade gentleman" with an emphasis on the word GENTLEMAN -- he always gives Robben his due respect in print and in off-the-record discussions. It's about time for a recording of Robben and Larry together, in the vein of the Lee Ritenour/Larry Carlton collaboration of 1995. Anybody want to join me in taking up this cause with Larry and Robben's respective handlers? |

I totally agree with everything you said. I think Larry and Robben share a mutual respect for each other.
I would love to hear a Robben and Larry collaboration CD. I think live would be the best setting! _________________ www.hendersounds.com

gitarz, I completely agree with you:
"Raunchy" is a good thing!
Larry Carlton is a master (and one hell of a human being, too!)
A collaboration between Robben Ford and Larry Carlton would be welcomed enthusiastically by this fan.
love, elizabeth (but don't get too close to your monitor...I have the flu.)
