That Red Baker really sounded mean. 
It sounded chunky, fullbodied and warm, whilst it could scream as well.
I remember someone selling shortly after Bakerguitars closing down.
Did Robben have to give it back because it belonged to Bakerguitars and then it got sold in the auction?
Or does Robben genuinly prefer the new black one? I remember Robben using it only for the Yellowjackets reunion and then he kept on using the Red Baker.
Any feedback or comments?

| Marin,from what i've been told,RF was switching Bakers to find the tone that was just right....his last black one has a mahogany body not alder...so its brighter...and sounds killer! he has been switching p/u's to still push the tone envelope...and I love it....i belive the red Baker was an early b-1 bluesman with a veritone switch(disconected)....and ofcourse a great left hand.... |

The first red P90 baker was sold at The Gear Page recently. It is chambered mahogany with spruce top. According to the seller it was made by Gene Baker to attract Robben to Baker Guitars, in other words it was not ordered by Robben, Gene presented it to Robben as a first prototype.
As i understand it Robben played it for a while suggested changes and gave it back to Gene when he recieved the next prototype.

Yes, the black one is THE one. As anyone attending multiple shows over the last 6 months may have noticed, the only show guitars Robben has been using these days is the Black Baker and the '60 Tele. Robben has been talking with me lately about possibly picking up a Les Paul to bring on the road too, just for the variety of sound.
But other than that, he is currently totally content and happy with the Baker/Tele combo.

And you guys had him DIALED at Moe's Alley. Both guitars sounded perfect. I'm still more fond of the Tele sound, but both were really great.

What pity that having finally come up with "the one" there will be no more. There's always hope that EB will work with Robben to have another go at it.
In the meantime, what about a reissue 54 LP for a traveling version of the one Robben records with? The couple of times he's brought that out, it's been awesome. You could shield up a good reissue and make it roadworthy. I just love the response of soapbars.

He used it during the 2002 tour. I remember exchanging a few posts with Gene Baker about it and he said that it had the historic 59/JB combination, i.e. no P90's. The exact model name was Baker BJC1 Varitone. "C" stands for chambered. Gene said that it had plenty of low-end so the 59/JB worked OK (compared to the PG/59 he uses now).
Is this the guitar that was sold at the PRS forum (there is no picture in your link)? Also, the guy who's selling the guitar is saying that "Robben played it for a while, then
sent it back asking him to make the same guitar with
Duncan humbuckers and a 2 volume, 2 tone Gibson-style
wiring harness." Therefore, I could be referring to a 2nd guitar of the same type but with HBs?
I really wonder where it ended up.....

I am glad to hear that Robben likes his new axe. (Are they still PG/59 pickups?)
I remember you mentioning that you and Robben had discussed taking the 335 on tour as well. Is this still a possibility?

If he's interested in this one, it's for sale. He seemed to enjoy it at the time. Maybe he was just being nice.
