Has anybody else here checked out Larry Carlton's new CD?
I just listened to several samples on iTunes Music Store and what I heard sounded saweeeet! As you might guess from the title - its all about the blues!

I think that Kirk95 has posted something about this CD on the board a few weeks earlier. |

It came out here in Japan in June of last year, and we went to see Larry at the Blue Note in Tokyo at that time. It was a good show and Larry played really well and seemed to enjoy himself a lot more than the last couple of times I had seen him. The CD is pretty good too.

There is review of it in the new issue of Vintage Guitar - the same one with Robben in it. The reviewer liked the CD, said some good things about it. |

I bought it yesterday. It's dynamite. I can't believe it's the same guy that plays with Fourplay! The playing is dynamic and fluid, with a wonderful precision and economy. I hope it's a million seller so Carlton will do more of this.

I bought it a month ago. I think it is one of his best CD's ever. I love it! |

While I can agree with everything said above, I cant help but feel it's a little too polite in places. |

Picked this up over the weekend. Best Carlton release since Last Nite. Friday Night Shuffle swings and Larry jumps on it. Every so often you'd think the Iceman was jumping in as Larry flips to the bridge pickup and digs in with this big shaking vibrato.
Even in the mellower sections, Larry plays with feeling and conviction, but is brought down by the production. I've been listening all weekend trying to figure out why this sounds so incongruous, as if someone merged Robben over a Norman Brown backing track. First off, they should have either gotten rid of the horns or at least put in much less. But even without the horns and synths going, it still sounds like it lacks life. The drums are way over compressed but it took another guitarist to notice that even Larry is really compressed. I would love to hear a stripped down, opened up remix of this. It would be one of the great blues instrumental albums.
Interesting sidenote. The cover shows Larry's right hand holding the pick with the top corner aginst the strings instead of the point. Robben does this at times. Makes for more of that soft sweet Larry tone. I wonder if one of them picked it up from the other, or is it just coincidence that two of the guitarists with the best tone do this. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Picked up a copy of this last night. Good stuff - it is the best Larry has done in long while. Have to agree about the production - very controlled and too perfect. I do like the horn section and the drummer is hot. Several of the cuts have a big band feel, which is great, but is lacking the free flow of a real big band (listen to a good BB King or Gatemouth Brown CD to hear what a real cranked up horn section can do to drive a guitar player) - again this is a very compressed and over produced set. But hey, the guitar playing is top notch and for once he does not disappoint (or make me angry that I wasted cash on his product). Two tele-thumbs up. |

Final note - I agree with A here, in that a stripped down more open version would be pretty cool. And I bet there are some serious jams in the can from these sessions. Interesting thought - release two versions, one with the compression and "smooth" sound and the other with a wide open feel See which one sells better? |

I would buy both (Robben's too!) I love the rough cuts, sometimes far more than the polished gems. Hell, I'd buy them all. Isn't that what being a fan means? No?
love, elizabeth

Got the CD myself last week, and I like it too. You are right, it does sound a bit too polished , but there are some nice things going on. I just wonder, sounds to me like he is playing a Strat on some cuts ? |

Just got it myself, this lunchtime - unfortunately not the Japanese Import version with Room335 - blues version on it
However, what i've heard so far is really good - shades of the Dan in many places but fwiw I thought that track 1 (Friday Night Shuffle) could have been a Robben tune! |
