Hi all,

I will probably get slated for mentioning Walter Trout as he does seem to collect quite a degree of animosity whenever I bring him into conversations, from purists who just screw their faces up to rock musicians who can't understand why he labels himself a Blueser. I love WT and consider him to be one of the finest musicians working today, he may not be the most subtle of performers but what he lacks in light and shade, I believe he more than makes up for in power, fire and passion and he is an electrifying guitarist to watch.

Animosity? Huh? I got to hear Trout and The Radicals at The Blue Cafe in Long Beach about a month and a half ago. He puts on one GREAT show. What's with his Strat, though? It looks as if he chained it to his rear bumper and then drove around for a few years with it bumping up and down on the pavement. (Seriously -- Trout puts so much pure energy into his shows that it's a wonder his axe is still in one piece.)

Hi again,

I once spoke of WT to a women who runs a Blues magazine here and she slammed the phone down on me but not before saying "you know nothing about the Blues, Walter has never been the Blues!" Over here at least, there are some who seem to think that the only person qualified to play Blues are elderly black guys who were born in or around the Mississippi, or even better dead black guys who did once play there in a bygone era. To me, everyone is qualified to play Blues, regardless of age, gender, classification or group.

On Walter's new DVD Relentless, his wife Marie asks him about his '73 Strat and he says that for over 20 years it was his only guitar. He now has an acoustic and a special one custom-built by Vigier for him, which he plays on the DVD. Anyway, Marie asks him about the guitar and he says that the reason it looks the way it does is because of years and years of playing in smoky clubs, the only part of the instrument with the original paint on it is right at the top under where he places his right elbow. That bit (he says) is where the smoke can't get to It's wild.
