I just have to thank everybody for their input...and the links to sites and sounds. I now have hard drive full of MP3s from all these great amp builders to wade through when my buddy and me get a chance to get together again, hopefully next week. This thread has been much more enlightening than I could have imagined with tons of knowledge brought to the table. If you guys think of anymore amp sites that I should check out, please post 'em. So far I have the following list of amp demos in MP3 form:
Diezel
Fuchs
Hot Cat
Komet
Mystique
Roccaforte
Skrydstrup
Fulton Webb
Fire Amp
So far, it has been a toss up between many of the amps I have listened to, at least in the MP3 format. It is unfortunate that all these amps can't all be assembled in one location near me for a real world test as I am sure that would beat the MP3 method. As of now, I tend to favor the Skrydstrup and the Mystique for that Ford/Carlton type sound and the Diezel for a full on chunkfest assault. Luckily I will get to check out the Diezel next week in person, though that won't really apply to what I am searching for here. Should be fun just the same.

Just remember that the clips are of different players doing different things. At one of the "tone fest's" at our local Two Rock shop we had several different player with different guitars and different styles (we played around with other folks axes as well). One guy did an awesome strat blues thing, others got great rock tones, one quy nailed clean Larry tones with one setup, my contribution was to impersonate Robben. Bottom line, each of use sounded different though the same rig. Best of luck finding the one that speaks to you and lets you get what you want out of it. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I know where you are coming from. All these amps have an awesome sound, just to different degrees. I have watched my buddy tweak and tweak an amp looking for nuances that I just didn't think were that critical for the performance ready to be recorded. The tone was already kick ass and he was just trying to squeeze the last 2% of more kick ass out of it. I just don't have the patience to be that much of a tweaker on the knobs, but that is just me. When we did the comparison between the Two Rock and the Bruno, they both smoked, in just slightly different ways. We even further muddied the waters by switching cabinets from a 4x 12 Marshall cab to a 2X12 Fane loaded cab which changed things quite considerably. I can't say that to my ear, one sounded really better than the other, they just sounded different. There are so many variables to be looked at it is rather frightening. The MP3s will at least give me a broad, albeit very broad, sense of what the amps can sound like...kinda sorta! Luckily, I am not the guy having to decide on one of these awesome sounding amps and hope I don't get buyers remorse. I am just trying to help out a buddy who has pretty discriminating tastes when it comes to tone and no way to access the wealth of knowledge all of you guys has shared with me.

I have to comment that this was a great thread and very informative regarding the whole amp thing. There are some great searches throughout this board on this topic, but I felt this thread really hit some of the details nicely. Good work, folks.
Let's add this. How do you think that "horn" sound Robben gets at times comes from. I know most of it will be in the touch and note selection, but I am curious if the Dumble with the boost on is the amp tone here? Would it include the overdrive, too? If I remember correctly, RF doesn't really crank the overdrive channel all that much (3 or 4?). It is one of my favorite tones of his and it makes an interesting study? Whattya think and thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "horn" sound. If you referred to some specific solos, it would be easier to relate. Of course Robben plays horn like licks and phrasing a lot but I think you are speaking of a unique tone that he gets. Folks on this board can probably recover what guitar, amp and effects were used on just about any recording. In addition, Robben uses a number of "technique" devices like muffling overtones with his right hand, muffling the attack and then letting the note "open up", turning the pick to the blunt end, using his thumb and fingers, laying his left hand flat across the fingerboard, etc... And he has a very relaxed grip on the instrument and fluid right hand when strumming. Squeezing the death out of a guitar does exactly that, it squeezes the life out of the tone. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Thanks again to all.

Actually we could get Skrydstrup, 4 diffrent Mystique (2 mystic Blues, the new Blue star and a one off i have), Fire Amp, Komet 60 and Constellation, Germino, Vintage Marshall and VOX in the same room in Stockholm Sweden , and MAYBE we could get a Dumble or two as well. If you like top class Marshall sounds do look at Germino amps.
I made a quick clip of the fire amp Chapin Hawk guitar (tele sound, actually ordered to soun kind of like Robbens teke) bridge pickup all the way. One take, if you find any mistakes you keep em Fire Rumba
Its VERY different to play than a Dumble style amp..

These clips are of my Fuchs ODS 100. I am not going fro a Robben tone here. However, I think that the amp could do it quite well. This is kind of close for not trying.

Amazing shot Captain. Vedddy Insteresting. Comparing this to Robben's rig last month, Larry has his set up much hotter. The bright and deep switches are on and the OD is way hotter than Robben was using. Larry has the bass down a bit but with the deep switch on and I presume that is an EV in there, then it may compensate. Also the 335 is darker than any of Robben's guitars. Given Larry's penchant for playing mellower these days, and Saphire Blue is not terrible overdriven, the OD settings are shocking. He must have been rocking out that night. I realize that are individually "tuned" but that is a big difference. Go Larry! _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

But.... Are these guys using the OD channel?? I heard Carlton just cranks the clean channel up. These amps can get great OD out of Channel 1. The OD settings woudl be moot then!!
If you go listen to my clips above, the two that are labeled as being my clean channel, you can hear that tone clearly...

Yes Scott, Robben does use the clean channel, as well as his boost, overdrive, and boost+overdrive options. Actually, his foot-selector-switch gets a lot of workout thru a set, even within some songs. _________________ B C-ing U!
