I just arrived home after my drive south from the last show in Seattle and decided to check my e-mail & boards before unpacking and settling in.
I found this question quite intiguing as the very last thing I did before pulling out of Seattle was to swing by the hotel and, at Robben's request, pick up a bag of CD's that he has either brought or bought while out on the road this time and brought them home with me, while he does some guest gigs with the Yellowjackets, for caretaking between tour legs.
Let's be nosey and see "what's in the bag, Goose", shall we?
1) Beatles - Revolver
2) Beatles - Rubber Soul
3) Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
4) John Coltrane Quartet - Crescent
5) Rickie Lee Jones - The Evening Of My Best Day
6) B.B. King - Singin' The Blues / The Blues ("His 1st two original albums")
7) Flying GrooveRare grooves and jazz classics from Bluebird and Flying Dutchman
8) Miles Davis - Milestones _________________ B C-ing U!

Yes, please a review from Austin would be nice. I would love to go but I actually have a gig all week, for a change. Let's see, go see Robben Ford or back up 30 high school choir members for an annual fundraiser concert? Well, at least I get all the fried catfish I can eat...
On a related note, the Yellowjackets web site has their first LP available with 4 unreleased demo cuts. Is RF on any of these cuts?

Ok, here's something to ponder. At one of Robben's clinics last year, Robben disclosed that he is a huge fan of Annie Lenox and the Eurythmics and listens to them frequently. He recounted one of his adventures when he attended, all by himself, a Eurythmics concert in Santa Barbara and how impressed he was with Ms. Lenox's performance.
Don't know about you, but his affinity for the Eurythmics sure surprised me!

I think one would assume Robben is on the unreleased demo cuts.
To say Robben IS on the original recording is of course, an understatement.
This is the first Yellowjackets recording. At that time Robben (one of 4 founding members), was a full time member of the group and is all over this recording.
If you detect a hint of passion in my statement, it is because I remember that era so fondly.
This is around the time when I first met Robben and use to go see this band quite often as they giged the Los Angles area.
Still some of my all time favorite music.

Thanks, Road, for the info. I don't want to assume Robben is on the unreleased tracks - inquiring minds want to know! I have wasted enough money on CDs assuming things that never turn out (are you listening Larry Carlton). And, in all honesty, the first Yellowjackets and Inside Story are not my fave RF releases, so I am treading softly. And you are right - there is some great 80s music out there if you dig far enough.
Re the Annie L comment - many people pass them by on the basis of the radio hits, but she is an incredible singer and the band could groove like an f-ning monster. I think if anything the insight into Robben's bag-o-music shows us what an open mind he has, so I don't doubt he could get into Lennox and company. Thanks to Daved for sharing.

The 80s weren't all that bad ! I was just listening to Maria McKee (Lone Justice/Shelter album) and that cow girl/cow punk strumming still rocks me!
Yeah, how 'bout them 80's?! I'm glad to see another "cow-punker" out there. I don't feel so all alone now.
The "cow-punk" term leaves so many with blank looks in their faces that it amazes me. I guess cow-punk was one of those phases that came and went so fast (and really had very little commercial success) that punk-wranglers were left high and dry on the plains.
Lone Riders, Charlie Sexton, the Dillards, and, of course, Maria McKee and Lone Justice along with so many other great country oriented powerpop groups. Man! Can that girl put on a show and belt out a tune at the same time or what!?! I still buy everything she releases. I have very few "live performance" videos in my collection (A couple only because of the years I worked with them... Eddie Money, Joe Satriani, Santana), and "Lone Justice Live" is one of the few I have purely because of my admiration and enjoyment of the band's performances (Strawbs, Supertramp, Love's Forever Changes Concert, etc.).
I was still a performer during those days in the Northwest and amongst the NW cow-punk scene (Most notably, Chelsea Raye's Rancho Notorious) I had my own group, The Silver Cockschaffer's, with our own local cow-hit "Outlaw Run".
I think my favorite group from that era was a band called The Unforgiven, a seven man, guitar army, massive vocal, wall-of sound cow punk group that released only one awesome album before disbanding. One member went on to a succesful career in the band Cracker. I keep looking for that Unforgiven album to find its way to CD, but so far to no avail. _________________ B C-ing U!

Daved, I don't remember seeing the band, Unforgiven, but I think the guitar player you're talking about is John Hickman. I think he still tours with Cracker, and they'll be coming to Tampa in a few weeks -- on tour from Fairbanks (AK) !!! Talk about changes in latitude
I saw Lone Justice a couple times at the Paradise Club in Boston during the 80s -- they were great, and I bet that video is too.
It would be cool to hear your 80s cow-hit "Outlaw Run"... do you have an mp3 of it that you could post?

John Hickman is the one, alright. Altho from what I have heard of Cracker, there is very little similarity to the wall-of-sound countryesque style that the Unforgiven featured.
As for "Outlaw Run", that was a long time ago. I think I may still have some old tapes or possibly even a vinyl EP somewhere in my 'vaults'. If I get ambitious enough and can find the time perhaps I can dig it out and digitize it somehow. I'd also have to check with my vocalist/cowriter on that song, Craig (who still lives in Portland), to get his approval. A note of gear interest is that many people later asked me what guitar setup I used on that recording. Suprisingly, it actually was a '67 Strat played thru a Pignose amp (running on batteries) turned up max... and it recorded great!.
It WOULD be fun to dig thru some of that old material.
I remember fondly my performance days in the NW... the shows at the Satyricon, Silver Moon Tavern, Sneaky Pete's Tavern, Pine Street Theater, Euphoria Tavern, Starry Night, the Last Hurrah, the Troutdale Sports Arena, etc., with some of my groups... Joe Normal, Rebel Choirboys (I even have an old flyer of a R.C. show which also lists L7 on the bill. This was around '87 when they, Courtney Love, and the whole NW grunge thing were still all 'local'.), Frank Van Zepplin and The Rolling Sex Beatles, The Twist featuring The Fabulous Davetones (This one even had an official fan club in Olympia, Washington, made up of a group of almost a dozen girls who came to all our area shows & knew all the Davetone moves. They would line up in front of the stage and copy our dance steps. What a laff!! I even have a video tape of one of our shows, filmed at The Last Hurrah. I Look Like Godzilla taking out Tokyo! ). Ah, what a scene back then... Johnny & the Distractions, Ed & the Boats, Quarterflash (Aka, Seafood Mama), Bonnie Bently, Nu-Schooz, The Crazy 8's, The Unreal Gods, Chelsea Rae, The Titanics, Craig Caruthers, Lori Calhoun & Nimble Darts, Robert Cray, Film At 11, Theater Of Sheep, and the list goes on & on.
Then, of course, there was our cow-punk effort, The Silver Cockschaffers. I'm sure some of the Cockschaffer EP material is still locked away in the dark corners of NW attics & basements here and there. "Outlaw Run", "Crawfish", "Highway Venture", "Johnny Ain't Dead", Alone At The Bar", "Summer In Your Convertable". Some pretty raw, but classic, stuff... I must say! LOL!
Good times, good times... "as legend would have it!!!" _________________ B C-ing U!
