I figured that with Robben. On the other hand, I have heard Carlton may stay on the clean channel!

Any thoughts???

Within the here-presented photos, I would have to say that the Yoshi's settings are closest to Robben's usual "generic" setting, with the Europe photos representing about the quietest/softest settings Robben will use and still be tolerably uncomfortable.

I don't remember what the deal was at the RiverJam gig to have Robben's treble and overdrive settings cranked so absurdly high. Very unusual, I must say.

Gee Captain, what a knob tweakers delight. If I look at the input gain settings they are all pretty much the same. I do notice that on the River Jam picture the master is way down and that is the only picture of Robben's set up with the OD cranked way up. He may have had to turn down and lost some power amp response and made up for it with more OD. Although with the 100 watts, it seems to be clean even when the master is turned up to 5, so there doesn't seem to be much power amp breakup happening. At the last set of shows, Robben used the boost/tone stack bypass a lot, more often than the overdrive channel. I did see Larry last year at an outdoor show in Mountain View and his overdrive tone was really fuzzy (not like Last Nite or Saphire Blue), that sound would be consistent with the settings in the picture.

Do you use the gain boost (tonestack bypass) on your Fuchs ODS? Are you cranking the input gain above 7 to get partially overdriven tones on the clean channel. I've found that on mine, the bass control has a noticable difference in the amount of overdrive and the last couple of weeks I've been turning it up to 6 and the treble and mids down to 4. This gives a more snarly tone to the overdrive and still sounds clear and rich on the clean. The mid boost doesn't kick in much distortion on clean but raises the level a bit for clean soloing and really thickens up the overdrive. My overdrive is tamed a bit compared to Andy's newer amps and so with settings like Larry's, I'm getting an amount of overdrive more like Robben. I've been enjoying turning the OD down and getting more dynamic response out of the amp. Means you have to play cleaner but it conveys more emotion.

My Fuchs has all the latest revisions. Lower preamp plate voltages for a smoother tone, different capacitors and resisters in the clean pre (this made a massive difference! Easy to OD the clean now), better reverb pan and routing, and NO SOVTEK tubes.

I can't stress how bad these are. I am using JJ tubes all around. I am very happy! I prefer the JJ ECC83S to my Mullard and Brimar NOS!

I am also using either a THD 2X12 with Celestion Lead 80s, or my Bob Burt Pine 2X12 with Weber alnico 1265s.

I can get some clean OD with the pre on 5 and the midboost and bypass on. Sounds great!

The Burt cab is new. I may use it for everything!! It is livlier and more resonant than the THD.

I have a set of Weber Alnico 1230 - 55 speakers on order. I'll see what goes best in what!!

Hey Mike that Jade sounds really sweet and really nice playing too...great touch!!

If you pull back the reverb just a tad and add a little delay (one delay timed to the track) you will totally nail the Larry sound.

I should know the answer to this, but what the hell. Instead of asking about Dumble-esque amps, what was Dumble himself trying to capture when he started making amps? What did he see as the holy grail of tone?

...and how would you know once you had found the ultimate tone? I could see tweaking through eternity trying to wrench that final bit of "tone" out of the rig. When is enough, enough so to speak? How very Zen like this is.

By this point, I don't think it's a quest for tone as much as it is a quest for getting the right reponses and interactions. There are still times when the Dumble farts out on a bass string, though nothing like a production amp. At the end of Blues for MD you can hear it get a bit shrill as Robben really digs in and lets go of the strings with his right hand. It's not a static thing. It's like the handling of a great road car. An Oldsmobile might feel plush and stable in a straight line but it can't handle the curves. The better the car "feels" the faster a great driver can negotiate the curves. It takes the combination of understanding the feel needed with the engineering chops to make it happen.
