I almost made it to the border, but never quite got there. Had the truck loaded with gear, my CD player cranked, and was headed out I-40 for OKC while Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells provided an evening soundtrack for the desert twilight.
Got about 20 miles from Needles when Dal called and told me to turn the truck around and head back home. The Friday the 13th curse has apparently struck again.
Robben has landed a very bad case of the flu that's going around. I had it immediately upon return from Europe, John Burr and Dewayne both battled it in early January. Hilary fought it during our week at Yoshi's, 2 shows at night and in bed the rest of the time.
Well, now Robben's got it and if you've had it then you know how severly it can lay you out.
I spoke with Dal again a little while ago and my understanding is that all shows up to Chicago have been cancelled or are being rescheduled. I'll try this drive again next week.
That's all I know at the moment. I'll try to keep everyone up to date as I know anything. _________________ B C-ing U!

Bad luck....
For some reason I thought you guys are invincible....
I have been dragging the cold/flu since New Years Eve and it still doesn't go away (maybe because I carry on working like yourself). I thought about you guys (touring so many places, meeting so many people) and was amazed how you keep up with the rythm.
I have also been to band rehearsals with temperature/fever and it is really difficult to concentrate on the playing. It made me think how professional guys like yourself and Robben are when they always give 100%.
bye,
marin (cough, cough....)

What rotten luck! Can anyone confirm the dates being cancelled this week? This was going to be my first time to see Robben live in St. Louis on Thursday.... _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

Yes, we're all a disappointed. We were really looking forward to the midwest shows and hope they can be successfully rescheduled.
Dal tells me to plan on picking things back up in Cicago next Saturday. He is in his office today trying to work out the bugs and details. He's also trying to reach those he knows of who have flights and rooms booked for the cancelled shows. Seems there were alot of fans flying in from all over.
It's a toughy, but we are trying to get the tour back up and going as soon as possible. Those who attended the Catalina shows in L.A. last year will remember that Robben had a bad cold and still hacked and coughed his way thru them, so you know that it's very severe if he is down for the count this time. _________________ B C-ing U!

If anyone is in touch with Robben, his buddies, his management, whoever, please tell him his fans in the San Francisco Bay Area are sending positive, healing thoughts his way. Robben, you are soooo important to us! |

Thanx for the well wishing. I will see that they are conveyed to Robben.
And, amidst this wave of positive energy, I just had a thought that I'd like to share.
I'm thinking about these shows that we have to cancel. Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis, Fayetteville, Madison... what an exciting run that would have been. A string of cities thru a part of America that is off Robben's-usual-beaten-path. There was a lot of excitement about these shows. Drawing people in from all over.
With Keep On Running we're finally opening or reopening markets and territories that have been unavailable to Robben for awhile. Dal and I and Robben have always said, Robben will be glad to play wherever he's invited. Business translation: wherever a promoter will provide a show and book Robben to play.
Now it occurs to me that there is enough buzz and excitement going on right now that some of these promoters in the less travelled areas are seeing potential reward for bringing Robben in and (to them anyway) 'taking a chance'.
This is all a good thing on their part and you fans, in these areas, might want to consider trying to salvage these cancelled shows by contacting whoever booked and/or promoted Robben, to express that you are disappointed, but you understand and still support this show even though it was cancelled and, most importantly, encourage that if the show gets rescheduled, that you would definitely attend.
These adventurous promoters who took a chance and then had shows unexpectedly pull out at the last minute will be understandably skittish about doing it again. But if they learn that the fans still want their artist to come back to town and the promoters feels they're losing a show of value, they will be more likely to feel they can still come out ahead by booking another show and will be more willing to try it again soon.
Giving them a reassuring pat-on-the-back certainly couldn't hurt your chances of having Robben invited back to your area, could it now? _________________ B C-ing U!

So sorry Robben is ill...obviously, he does not cancel shows capriciously, so positive thoughts and well wishes are sent from this fan (and I am sure many others.)
(By the way, this fan was considering accepting an invitation to Kansas City...next time, perhaps... never been there!)
Robben, get well.... That's what really matters.

Is Robben feeling any better? These weird flus are scary things.
Hope he gets well soon, because I'm looking forward to seeing him next time he's in Collie-fornia! |

Again, the priorities are as follows:
1) get Robben back on his feet
2) reschedule shows.
GET WELL SOON, ROBBEN! WE LOVE YOU! |

I was there and it was obvious Robben was under the weather, to say the least. He had a pile of cough drops on his amp and even took his guitar off in the middle of a tune, ran down the hall to the bathroom, and ran back to pick up where he left off. I have to imagine he would have rather been at home resting and recovering than doing a show but he put on a great show anyway. The guy's a true professional.

Robben best wishes, and Dal - PLEASE re-schedule Oklahoma City. I just got back to Dallas this morning after a long weekend trip planned around the OKCity concert. Found out about the cancellation when we arrived at the venue 30 minutes before the show was to start. We have been waiting years for Robben to come within driving distance of Dallas. I have attended the clinic in Ojai but never been able to catch Robben and his band live. The disappointment after traveling all weekend, taking time off from work, and having 4th row tickets right in front of Robben is HUGE. |

Please note that as Daved said, it is the venue that does the booking (as all of us amateur musicians are painfully aware). So pepper the venue and promoter with messages about how you and your friends will come back to their fine city and venue and spend lots of money if they will only book Robben back in.
It's an unfortunate paradox that the most expensive guitar in Fender's catalog was the Robben Ford model and other manufacturers would give anything to have Robben using their stuff, but to promoters it's Robben Who? _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
