Lindsey Buckingham; "Frozen Love" Buckingham Nicks, "I'm So Afraid" Fleetwood Mac Live, circa 1980,
Steve Miller: "Evil" Rock Love an out of print studio recording with a live side Evil is the secon song on the live side. Think it showed up on a compilation later on.
Peter Green; the second half of "Oh Well" Then Play On
Joe Bonamassa; "Blues Deluxe" Blues Deluxe. His tribute to Jeff.
Jeff Beck; "Because we've Ended as Lovers"
Just the first things that come to mind but what do I know I'm a drummer.

Robben Ford - Mystic Mile (Mystic Mile)

Eric Clapton - Have You Ever Loved A Woman? (24 Nights)

Jerry Douglas - Senia's Lament (Lookout For Hope)
Phil Palmer - Not The Only One (Just For You - Paul Brady)
Jesse Ed Davis - Tina Smiled (AKA Grafitti Man - John Trudell)

This takeoff on the Hendrix Woodstock jam is awesome. It shows that not only can Vai shred, but he has musical passion (something missing in a lot of shredders). The part where he breaks down back to clean is one of those back it up and play it again parts for me. Complete control of a wild rig, used to make a musical statement. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Dave Edmunds - Sweet Little Lisa (off Repeat When Necessary) - the one take solo by Albert Lee is an amazing drop dead heart stopping primer in chickin' pickin', clean and articulate phrasing, interesting lines. This is one of those solos you hear and go - what the F*** am I doing trying to play guitar!
Jeff Beck - many folk mention his work on Blow by Blow, but some of his best stuff IMO is on the two JB Group LPs with Max Middleton, Bob Tench, etc - in particular the slide work on "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," off the Orange album.
Mick Taylor - Walking on Sunset on Mayall's Laurel Canyon LP. When you talk about tone you have to talk about Mick Taylor. |

Also Dave Gilmour's solo in Another Brick In The Wall ... I love that one.
Plus, Gary Moore playing the instrumental track The Prophet. It's from his Back To The Blues album from 2001 and it's magnificent. _________________ To the world you may just be one person - but to one person you may just be the world. |

There are players I listen too a lot more than SRV -- but I freqently need heart resuscitation after putting on "Stranded." (And yes, I DID have to look up "resuscitation" in the dictionary before submitting this post. Thanks for asking.) _________________ - BlueRunner |

A number of folks have mentioned this. The intro always kills me. What a display of tonal variations with just hands and the pickup switch. And the lyrical way he plays it... This was the first I ever heard this song. No matter how many times I hear recordings of it being played "correctly" it always sounds stilted after this. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

WOW - I hadn't heard that in years but at the mere mention the whole intro played in my head just like a CD. It is one of the most amazing renderings! Thanks for reminding me.
Cheers! _________________ iamthewalrus

Thanks Java!
Jimmy had a lot of taste in those days, excellent sense of rythm and very groovey.

Wow! Thanks all for your input on this. I started with just one, but some of the stuff mentioned above reminds me of some stuff I haven't listened to in a while, so I'll add to my list...
(in no particular order)
Two Rivers - Jeff Beck : Wonderful piece of music and beautiful guitar playing. How he managed to keep the continuity going in something that is pieced together from dozens of takes is beyond me.
Dear Prudence - Hiram Bullock : Not widely knkown here, but a great player and there's a couple of lines in this one that just kill me
All The Turning Away - Dave Gilmour : 'nuff said.
Edge Of Darkness - Eric Clapton : from the 24 Nights CD (not the DVD version which is awful). Was great in the original soundtrack / TV series (and helps if you know the subject matter) but this version is shivers down the spine stuff.
Games of Love and Loneliness - Tommy Emmanuel. Great tele tone, and I've seen him move people to tears with this tune live.
... and not exactly a guitar solo, but:
Robbens (spoken) introduction to "Dont Let The Sun Catch You Crying" on The Authorised Bootleg. Robben's respect for Ray Charles summed in a just a few words.

Well Chris, let's also include the guitar solo of this song in this list. Alway giving me the goosebumbs!
