Dave Edmunds - Sweet Little Lisa (off Repeat When Necessary) - the one take solo by Albert Lee is an amazing drop dead heart stopping primer in chickin' pickin', clean and articulate phrasing, interesting lines. This is one of those solos you hear and go - what the F*** am I doing trying to play guitar!

Jeff Beck - many folk mention his work on Blow by Blow, but some of his best stuff IMO is on the two JB Group LPs with Max Middleton, Bob Tench, etc - in particular the slide work on "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," off the Orange album.

Mick Taylor - Walking on Sunset on Mayall's Laurel Canyon LP. When you talk about tone you have to talk about Mick Taylor.

Also Dave Gilmour's solo in Another Brick In The Wall ... I love that one.

Plus, Gary Moore playing the instrumental track The Prophet. It's from his Back To The Blues album from 2001 and it's magnificent.

There are players I listen too a lot more than SRV -- but I freqently need heart resuscitation after putting on "Stranded." (And yes, I DID have to look up "resuscitation" in the dictionary before submitting this post. Thanks for asking.)

Wow! Thanks all for your input on this. I started with just one, but some of the stuff mentioned above reminds me of some stuff I haven't listened to in a while, so I'll add to my list...

(in no particular order)

Two Rivers - Jeff Beck : Wonderful piece of music and beautiful guitar playing. How he managed to keep the continuity going in something that is pieced together from dozens of takes is beyond me.

Dear Prudence - Hiram Bullock : Not widely knkown here, but a great player and there's a couple of lines in this one that just kill me

All The Turning Away - Dave Gilmour : 'nuff said.

Edge Of Darkness - Eric Clapton : from the 24 Nights CD (not the DVD version which is awful). Was great in the original soundtrack / TV series (and helps if you know the subject matter) but this version is shivers down the spine stuff.

Games of Love and Loneliness - Tommy Emmanuel. Great tele tone, and I've seen him move people to tears with this tune live.

... and not exactly a guitar solo, but:

Robbens (spoken) introduction to "Dont Let The Sun Catch You Crying" on The Authorised Bootleg. Robben's respect for Ray Charles summed in a just a few words.
