As an avid music listener and guitar lover I was into the whole fusion thing that was going on in the late 1970's. The first player that grabbed my ear was Lee Ritenour on Captain's Journey. I eventually picked up everything that was available from Lee, before and after, domestic and import, even direct to disc. At some point I heard Larry Carlton, who I had actually already heard as a member of the Crusaders, but it was possibly his first solo album that really impressed me. His fluid playing was what i really loved, and although I didn't really like the songs as much as Ritenour's, (some of Larry's had a Country kind of feel), his playing often made up for my personal music preferences. Soon after this, a mucisian friend of mine, know my love for a certain type of guitar player brought a new album to my house. It was titled Yellowjackets, a new group, and he said I had to hear this guitar player. He played the song "Imperial Strut", which has one of the greatest solos I've ever heard, even to this day. The guitar player was of course Robben Ford. Of course, I became totally immersed in this record, the sound, the phrasing, the voicing, the whole nine. I subsequently forgot all about both Ritenour and Carlton, not to say that I didn't still listen to and occasionally buy their records, but I had a new favorite guitarist and to this day he still is. Around 1981 or so,in a used record store I came across a relatively obscure album called "The Inside Story" by Robben Ford. This album was a life changer musically for me. Robben alway's says what I want to say with his playing but then he say it better than you could ever imagine. I've been a fan of Metheny, Isley, Nugent, Demeola,Scofield, any a few more, all are great players. The difference is Robben, like Jimi Hendrix, isn't just a player, but the guitar is an extension of their very being. I've seen Robben live 5 or 6 times over the years, most recently a week and a half ago, and he's playing better than ever, not faster, not more complicated, but he's saying more than all the guys I mentioned earlier. No offense fellas, but he's the best.

Welcome cmichaelrush!

I listened to all the guys you mentioned! Captain's Journey...man I use to wear that out....then I discovered Larry and then a keyboard player from Canada turned me on to the Yellowjackets. That was it hooked for life!
