never had the chance to see one in the flesh, let alone play through one.
A better chance of winning lotto,pools, sweepstakes, ect.ect.
So how do you know when a clone sounds like the real thing if you,ve never experienced the 'real thing'? I've heard players useing top gear
and sounded average, also great players through below standard gear
but sounded magic. How much is the equipment and how much is soul/passion?

May be it is just a matter for each one , like a personnal path.
Electric guitar is something really special.
I've never tried a Dumble but i can visualize the thrill, i am ready for
a good amp that is. When i listen to Up the line by Kirk , i wish i can afford
an opal (Volker strieffel have a real good sound too) (( an other "problem" is that kirk use the tc too, how much does it counts for the sound?)).
I don't like mesa boogie that much , but i never played all the models.
When i listen to a FUCHS , i wish i could blablabla.
So for me i would love to get a new amp with a lot of tubes and tweakings.
One who makes every little pressure of the hand blast from the loud speaker ((( but now we enter the speaker commotion heavy duty thread)))
There is a Mystic head on Ebay made for SRV , seems not bad either.

Saw an old DVD last week of Larry Carlton playing at a jazz festival,
(can't recall where) but I turned the sound up real loud ( through a great
system) so I could every little nuance ( could almost hear him breathing).
He's sound was so clean, yet warm and full I'm sure he ( and Robben) could take a banjo, plug it into a pile of horse dung, throw a mike in front,
and still sound great.

A friend of mine saw Van Halen playing a 100 Bucks Peavy amp in a music school and that was it .
When you listen to old Robben Ford stuff i think there is no Dumble , may be just stock average gear.Hey ,

In your Carlton DVD ? does he play the Dumble ?

Hey,
I know an amp tech who is truly brilliant.He has seen the inside of one of Dumble's amps before.Wood circuit board! but nothing special going on in there.I guess people love drama.I have seen a suede covered head that had been owned by someone in the Doobie Brothers and a combo made by Dumble at Makin' Music in Chicago.I didn't play through them though.
I saw Robben reunite with the Yellowjackets in a rare performance in Detroit(a place called The Magic Bag) in the late 90's.He didn't have his own rig for the show,just a Fender Robben Ford model.He read lots of charts and used two music stands.You could hardly even see him.
The amp(he may have had two)was one of those Fender's with rear mounted controls(like a tweed Bassman)but covered in black tolex.Blues deluxe or something.A late model Fender that nobody cares about.He also had a few Boss pedals.Can you belive it?No true bypass!Guess what?He sounded exactly like Robben Ford!He even played "Imperial Strut" and "Revelation".What's the story with Dumble anyway?He was Howard,now he needs to be called Alexander.He builds one amp each year and also builds his own guns.Odd guy!

Definitely a Dumble fan here.
I own a Two Rock Onyx, which gets me damn close!
The first time I truly was (knowingly) enamoured of those touch senstive, clean yet overdriven magical tones was when listening to Larry Carlton's "Last Nite" live CD. There was no going back after that...I'd been hooked. And Robben has only made it worse. I saw RF live in Jan '04 at the Key Club in Hollywood with some player pals. Robben had his Dumble head and 212 cab/TC2290/Variac/Wah/etc. rig...and the tone was jaw dropping. (duh)
Dumble tones, and the clone tones...are my holy grail.
