I have the Banzai Fireball II and have heard conflicting comments about the setup.
The guitar, the volume/wah, the Banzai Fireball - in that order and in front of the Fender Concert. And then, run the delay through the effects loop.

The volume pedal usually comes last after the effects. The delay in the loop should be good.

It depends on what you want the volume level to control. In Robben's usual Dumble set up, the pedal mimics the controls on the guitar and is before the gain stage of the amp. So playing with the pedal changes the amount of overdrive as well as the overall level, just as turning the guitar up and down would do. Putting the volume pedal after the Fireball would allow you to change the amount of overdrive you get from the Fireball with the guitars volume controls and change the overall volume with the pedal. This can be useful in a cover band where you want to have distorted comp parts that are quieter than the solos. The other option is to put a volume pedal in the amps series loop. I know one guy who uses one volume pedal in front of the amp and another in the loop. The first one esentially controls the gain while the other one sets the volume of the rig. Very handy but you can get lost as well. When I use a volume pedal, I generally don't touch the guitars volume controls. On R&B cover gigs I also put an envelope filter/T-wah in front of the volume pedal. By keeping the guitar at the same level the t-wah responds the same, but I can vary the volume depending on what the band is doing. This is much easier than standing on one leg all night pumping the wah pedal, Shaft! can you dig it?
I would suspect that Robben probably puts the volume pedal before the Fireball so that it affects the overdrive more like his usual rig.
Delay in the loop is prefereable so you are slapping the overdriven sound rather than muddying up the sound with extra notes going through the overdrive at the same time as the primary one, if that makes sense.
Since the Concert has a pretty decent overdrive itself, one thing you might try is running the overdrive channel turned down to pretty clean and then putting the Banzai, with the compression switch off, in front of it. This way the amp is almost breaking up and the boost from the Banzai kicks it over the top into overdrive. I think this is what Garth does, but he also has a power soak on the amp so he may be overdriving it on the clean side instead. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Olaf is apparently back logged www.banzaieffects.com. I bought mine a long time ago thru www.musictoyz.com. Olaf is pretty good about responding to emails ... you might ask him regarding this matter.
While there are many other competing pedals that are no doubt outstanding, I love mine and would not part with it. My setup is pretty simple: Gibson ES335 whereby the volume control is setup to blend both pickups, a volume/wah, the Banzai, a touch of delay, Fender Concert 60 watt. I've also used the same setup with a 1983 Fender Tele, a Charvel with active pickups, and a PRS Custom.
From time to time, I've used the same setup with an Ashdown Peacemaker Combo 40. And, in all cases, the Banzai improves the sound I get from either amp.
Good luck! |

Thanks for the detailed info ... now I have some solid reasoning to go with the equipment and an opportunity to try different approaches. I doubt that I will ever be needing a second volume pedal, but it's interesting.
It's funny you should mention Garth, as I consider him a friend. I listen to his live music every chance I get with the last as recent as the middle of Feb. where he played for a heart benefit at the Torch Club. He's extremely talented and a great guy as well.
In fact, based on Garth's setup ... I had my Gibson ES335 modified where a volume control now blends both pick ups with the toggle switch disabled. All I can say is WOW! No the guitar has many different tonal qualities noticeable at each minor dial change. |

I had to wait 8 months for mine. Some folks have had better luck scouring European music stores for one in stock.
I noticed that you design and market distortion boxes yourself. I could see where Olaf might be reluctant to sell you one. Unlike my Centaur, nothing is potted inside, the components are still marked and it would be pretty easy to reverse engineer the 2 sided circuit board.
As Laurendo Almedeia said on an LA4 record, "If this song should sound like another, remember if you cut from one, that's plagerism. If you cut from more than one, is research". Look through the SR patents, the Fireball uses the same op-amp. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I mailed a number of European dealers and the Effects Center in Paris had one in stock so I had mine in a matter of days.
