Robben Ford Discussion

I am familiar with the fact that both Robben and Warren Haynes have played for Phil Lesh separately, but has anyone ever seen these two pair up on stage? I think that would be absolutely killer.

I've heard that when Phil went shopping for a guitar player the people invited to try out included Robben, who won the gig until he left, and folks like Jimmy Herring and John Scofield. A fellow I know who was also invited said he just looked at the list and said "my work here is done"
What a day that must have been. All these great players with all these different styles stretching out over Phil's tunes. What a jam session if they all played together!

Hi, intresting, having watched the Allman DVD at the beacon, i was
phantasmizing of Dereck T & Robben F jamming & bluesing Together.

Ohhhhh, Ô Don't get me wrong , he is a monster (no pun) and I really appreciate Govt Mule but i think he is too garymooreishy , while the way D.plays without pick would fit perfectly the way Robben plays................IMHO

What you said sounds chauvinistic. Why must everything be about sex? I thought we were talking about music. Anyway, I think Robben is just fine by himself and/or with his band(s). I think you might need to find another message board if you want to talk sex.

I went to the first G3 concert in Concord and I've been part of a few "wank fests" at JJ's, the local blues club. Agreed, these can turn into pure noise. I don't think that is the objective here. I think what folks are talking about is that Robben seems to like the interplay of other musicians, and considering what sort of other guitarists different approachs might inspire him (and the other mucisians) in interesting directions.

I'm sorry to have to offended you Bunnylover,I guess I assume we are mostly guys talking about this stuff.My point was not to chat about sex(that's more fun to do in real life),but that some of these fantasies sound a kind of silly.I guess it would be nice to hear Robben play with say,Elvin Jones or in an organ trio setting(like old Grant Green&John Patton records).
I don't need to hear him with another guitarist.
If you are still upset,just remember that great tune Robben used to do

If you want to hear Robben in a classic organ group setting (like Grant Green with John Patton), be sure to pick up "Rythymstick," an odd album from the 80's recorded under Dizzy Gillespie's name at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey (where most of the classic 60's Blue Note records and 70's CTI records were recorded). It's also out on video. Robben plays in a setting with one of the great organ players, Jimmy McGriff I believe (although it might be Jack McDuff -- I haven't watched the video in years). Robben is a bit out of his element and looks a little uncomfortable in that straight jazz setting. Dizzy did not play on that particular track.
